Abundant Giving for Joy-Filled Living

God loves it when the giver delights in the giving.
2 Corinthians 9:7b  (The Message)

Be sure and look below for a message from our Church Council Chair explaining more about this emphasis and our Celebration Sunday event on October 25th.

Greetings!

This Sunday, Bishop Will Willimon will preach at both services.  We will have a reception for him at 10 am.  Be sure and bring your favorite brunch item to share!

Be sure and plan to be here that Sunday and invite others to join us!

Our scripture lesson this week comes from the Gospel of Mark:

When Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, a great crowd gathered around him; and he was by the sea.  Then one of the leaders of the synagogue named Jairus came and, when he saw him, fell at his feet and begged him repeatedly, "My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be made well, and live."  So he went with him. And a large crowd followed him and pressed in on him.
While he was still speaking, some people came from the leader's house to say, "Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the teacher any further?"  But overhearing what they said, Jesus said to the leader of the synagogue, "Do not fear, only believe."  He allowed no one to follow him except Peter, James, and John, the brother of James.  When they came to the house of the leader of the synagogue, he saw a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly.  When he had entered, he said to them, "Why do you make a commotion and weep? The child is not dead but sleeping."  And they laughed at him. Then he put them all outside, and took the child's father and mother and those who were with him, and went in where the child was. He took her by the hand and said to her, "Talitha cum," which means, "Little girl, get up!"  And immediately the girl got up and began to walk about (she was twelve years of age). At this they were overcome with amazement. He strictly ordered them that no one should know this, and told them to give her something to eat.
Mark 5:21-24, 35-43
  • When Jairus first approaches Jesus, he seems very sure that Jesus can heal his daughter.  But after he is told that his daughter is dead and encouraged to not bother Jesus, Jesus says, "Do not fear, only believe."
o   Under what circumstances does fear get in the way of your belief?
o   What do you do when the facts of a particular situation seem to indicate that it is hopeless?
o   What would Jesus say to you in that situation?
  • What might this passage have to say to us as a congregation as we discern our vision and look at how we will support that vision in the coming year?

    See you on Sunday!

ABUNDANT GIVING FOR JOY-FILLED LIVING
God loves it when the giver delights in the giving.
2 Corinthians 9:7b  (The Message)

For the last six weeks, we have stood at the end of God's Promised Land and now we are preparing to enter into a land filled with milk and honey.  As we do so, we will take the time to reflect on how much God has given to us and how we can joyfully give back to God.

This year's stewardship emphasis is based on the biblical philosophy of the need of the giver to give for his or her own spiritual development, rather than on the need of the church to receive. Instead of treating people like members of a social club who should pay dues, we will treat people like followers of Jesus Christ who want to give unselfishly as an act of discipleship.

During morning worship on Celebration Sunday, we are asking our attendees and members to make an estimate of giving for 2010 to our church's ministries in this community and around the world.  Rather than creating a budget that we ask the congregation to support, we will use the estimates of giving to determine our budget for 2010.  We believe that if everyone gives as God (rather than a speaker or pastor or church leadership) leads you to give that we will have enough funds to do what God is calling us to do in the coming year.

Every attendee and member attending morning worship on Celebration Sunday who completes an Estimate of Giving Card does so voluntarily. The procedure is done in such a way that no one feels personal embarrassment if he or she chooses not to fill out a card.  We urge people who feel strongly opposed to completing a card to attend also, as the celebration is for all the blessings that God has given us, as well as our individual and congregational commitment of our gifts, of all types.

We will do no home solicitation to ask people to complete cards. During morning worship our guest leader, Rick Owen, will conduct a brief period of instruction and inspiration, climaxed by members making their commitments as a confidential act of worship.

We will encourage participation in Consecration Sunday events through the Stewardship Team and Church Council. Since we will make no follow-up visits to ask people to complete their cards, we will make every effort to inform, inspire, and commit everyone to attend Celebration Sunday worship.

Thanks in advance for your enthusiastic participation in Celebration Sunday events.

Chair, Church Council
