To help them grow and develop the heart of a servant to be the future leaders of our church, community, and nation that God is calling them to be. JOIN US AS WE JOURNEY TO THE PROMISED LAND!!!

Beginning August 16th, we will enter into a six-week church-wide study designed to help us discern God's vision for New Life UMC.  We want EVERYONE to be involved!  We are asking all Sunday School and Bible Study groups to study the same material during that six weeks and if you are not currently part of a small group Bible study, we are asking you to participate in one during that six week period!  In addition to joining an on-going class, Pastor Sherill will teach a class on Sunday Nights at 5:30 p.m.  (We are asking for a $10 donation to cover the cost of the books.) Also, each week Pastor Sherill will preach a sermon related to the study that week.

We need your participation and your input!

Please keep New Life and God's vision for our ministry in your prayers and get ready for a six-week adventure to God's Promised Land for New Life!

Greetings!

This week we begin our six-week journey toward identifying God's vision for New Life.  We begin by listening in on Jesus' final prayer with his disciples prior to his arrest and crucifixion found in the seventeenth chapter of John.

1 After Jesus had spoken these words, he looked up to heaven and said, "Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son so that the Son may glorify you, 2 since you have given him authority over all people, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. 3 And this is eternal life, that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. 4 I glorified you on earth by finishing the work that you gave me to do. 5 So now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had in your presence before the world existed.
6 "I have made your name known to those whom you gave me from the world. They were yours, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. 7 Now they know that everything you have given me is from you; 8 for the words that you gave to me I have given to them, and they have received them and know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me. 9 I am asking on their behalf; I am not asking on behalf of the world, but on behalf of those whom you gave me, because they are yours. 10 All mine are yours, and yours are mine; and I have been glorified in them.
11 And now I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one, as we are one. 12 While I was with them, I protected them in your name that you have given me. I guarded them, and not one of them was lost except the one destined to be lost, so that the scripture might be fulfilled. 13 But now I am coming to you, and I speak these things in the world so that they may have my joy made complete in themselves. 14 I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world. 15 I am not asking you to take them out of the world, but I ask you to protect them from the evil one. 16 They do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world.
17 Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. 18 As you have sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. 19 And for their sakes I sanctify myself, so that they also may be sanctified in truth.
20 "I ask not only on behalf of these, but also on behalf of those who will believe in me through their word, 21 that they may all be one. As you, Father, are in me and I am in you, may they also be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 The glory that you have given me I have given them, so that they may be one, as we are one, 23 I in them and you in me, that they may become completely one, so that the world may know that you have sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.
24 Father, I desire that those also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory, which you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world. 25 "Righteous Father, the world does not know you, but I know you; and these know that you have sent me. 26 I made your name known to them, and I will make it known, so that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and I in them."

  •   For whom did Jesus pray?  What were the purposes of Jesus' prayer?  What is the mission on Jesus' disciples?  What words in Jesus' prayer indicated Jesus prayed for YOU?
  • What difference does it make to know that Jesus prayed for you and for New Life?
  • What are the characteristics of a praying church?
  • Are the characteristics of a praying church evident in New Life?
  • Think of a time when you felt especially joyful at church.  What made that a joyful time for you?

If you are not able to attend one of the studies on this scripture this week, feel free to e-mail me with your answers to these questions! And if the scripture or questions raise questions for you, please let me know about those also!

See you Sunday!!!

Compelled by Love
A Journey to Missional Living
By:  Philip Nation and Ed Stetzer

God wants you as His ambassador, to reflect His character and to join His redemptive mission.  Jesus' love for you compelled Him to die on the cross.  What will your love for Him compel you to do today?

Based on Corinthians 5:14-15 it encourages participants to understand that we are compelled by Christ love to be missionaries where we live.

We hope you can join us, but will need to know if you plan on attending.  We will need to order books.  If you have already been contacted, no need to respond.  Anyone else interested please call Babs Holcomb @ 587-0217 or 599-0562.

The Shack Bible Study - Pastor's Bible Study

Beginning Wednesday night, August 12th at 6:45 in the Room 4 (the long room in the Old House)

The Shack by WIlliam P. Young is an independently published novel that has taken the country by storm.  Some people hate it. Some love it. Some find it merely entertaining. Others feel like it has changed their life by changing the way they view God.  Some believe it contains heresy. And others say it is only fiction.  One thing is for sure, The Shack has people discussing what they believe and don't believe about God, about Jesus, about the Holy Spirit, and about forgiveness, judgment, and the life to come!  So this fall, we intend to use this book to explore some basic concepts about our faith and how we apply faith to our daily lives.  Feel free to bring the book with you-but don't forget your Bibles!!!  If you wish to purchase a copy of the book, it is available at most bookstores as well as at Amazon.comAnd if you have no wish to read the book, but want to join in the discussion, I have a summary of the book to share with you so you can fully enter into the conversation.  So come and join us!

Welcome to our newest members!!

Building and Finance Update

A few weeks ago in worship, I mentioned our need to repair and upgrade our church buildings.  The Trustees have done a WONDERFUL job of keeping everything safe and in working order, but we have a number of items which need to be corrected soon.  As much as possible, the trustees have repaired items themselves as well as either raised or donated funds to keep our buildings in good shape. But now we need your help!

I asked the Trustees to make a list of repairs that are necessary in the short term as well as an estimate of what those repairs will cost us.  As a result, we believe that we need to raise around $20,000 to cover the following repairs/upgrades to our facility (these are not in order of priority):

  •  Awnings for and Repair of Sanctuary and Kitchen Doors
  • Installation of crash bars to outside doors (Fire/safety requirement)
  • Repair Sanctuary Roof Leak
  • Reconstruct chancel area of Sanctuary
  • Misc Maintenance and repairs to the Youth Center (House on the Corner) including wall repairs and carpeting
  • Repair broken windows in Old House
  • Repair icemaker and dishwasher in the kitchen

In order to do these repairs, we are asking you to prayerfully consider making a donation for the building/repair fund.  Funds designated for the building/repair fund will only be used for keeping upkeep of our building and grounds and will not be used for ministry or day to day expenses.  Therefore, this must be an additional free will gift over and above your regular giving to the church.  (Please do not divide your regular giving into building and ministry because that will result in our having to cut ministries!)

One member has already risen to the challenge and donated $2000 toward the repairs and challenges others to rise up to support the Trustees in their work.  I will also be donating an additional amount above my tithe toward the building fund.  My prayer is that the ministries of New Life are important enough for you that those who can afford to will take up the challenge and join us.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me or talk to one of our trustees.

Thank you for your prayerful support!
