Greetings!
Remember, we have Bible study for ALL ages tonight at 6:30. Adults will meet at 6:30 in the "long room" of the Old House.
Also-don't forget everyone is invited to join us for pizza and coke at 6 in the Fellowship Hall!
This week, we conclude our reflections on God's call and our response as we hear Paul urging the congregation in Corinth to run to win:
24Do you not know that in a race the runners all compete, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win it. 25Athletes exercise self-control in all things; they do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable one. 26So I do not run aimlessly, nor do I box as though beating the air; 27but I punish my body and enslave it, so that after proclaiming to others I myself should not be disqualified. 1 Corinthians 9:24-27
It's easy to get caught up in Paul's sports imagery and think that he is worried about how well we compete against others and whether or not we will earn our own reward, but in the context of his letter to the Corinthians it is clear that Paul is speaking of a kind of running and the imperishable reward is the Kingdom of God.
-
How should Christians "run" this race we call life? Does it make a difference what our goal is
-
Whether you are a prize winning athelete, musician, artist, or scholar, you must discipline yourself. No one becomes skilled without working hard at it.
-
What kind of disciplines should Christians practice in their daily lives to prepare for the race?
-
What kind of self-control must we exercise
-
One of the big headlines over the past few weeks is the internet photo of Michael Phellps apparently smoking marijuana. For many he is now "disqualified" as a role model. In the last verse of this passage, Paul proclaims that he wishes to live the kind of life that won't disqualify his message. If we are called to proclaim the gospel, what kinds of actions, attitudes, and behaviors would disqualify our witness?
Those of you who missed worship last Sunday missed a powerful service! Special thanks to Paula Wright and Sharna Kennamer and our youth for sharing their gifts with us!
Thanks also to the 60 folks who participated in the focus groups. For those who weren't able to attend another opportunity will be scheduled soon!
Hope to see you all on Sunday-remember each and every one of you matter! Our worship is strengthened by your presence!

2009 CONFIRMATION CLASS
Each year, an opportunity is given for our young people to spend some time studying what it means to be a follower of Christ and a member of Christ's body, the Church. At the end of this special time of studying, questioning, and exploring, youth are given the opportunity to make a profession or reaffirmation of their faith. Classes will begin in early February and those in the Confirmation Class who choose to affirm their faith will be received into membership of the Church on Pentecost Sunday, May 31st. If you would like your youth (ages 10 and up) to be involved in this class, please let me know so I can begin planning. If you have questions about confirmation and what it means, please feel free to e-mail me and you can also learn more here.
Please begin to keep our 2009 Confirmation Class in your prayers.
Classes Begin this Sunday!
Parent Orientation 4 p.m.

Mark you calendars for April 16-18 for this very important weekend!
The goals for this weekend are to help middle school youth, their parents and adult workers with youth to: grow in their understanding of sex as an important part of the divine plan for human beings. expand their knowledge of the physical and emotional facts about their sexuality and their sexual development through puberty, as the basis for developing positive attitudes. discover and practice appropriate language and communication skills needed to talk meaningfully, both within the family circle and in other responsible settings, about sex, dating, love and marriage. explore their attitudes toward themselves, especially toward the sexual dimensions of their lives. understand some of the range of possibilities of personal lifestyles and modes of relating to other people. explore some of the attitudes which govern their interactions with other persons who relate to them In various ways (i.e. Parents, Peers). understand the meaning of the teenager's emergence from parental controls and his assuming responsibility for his own freedom. examine the standards youth and adults choose as the guidelines for their lives, from among the many choices made available today by our culture choose for themselves guidelines for sexual and interpersonal behavior which reflect the best ethical thinking of the Christian community.

Nursery workers needed
There is still a great need for volunteers in the nursery. Sunday, February 1, we were blessed to provide child care in both traditional and contemporary services. This is a wonderful ministry that requires only 1 hour of your Sunday. There are openings for traditional, Sunday school and contemporary. Please search your calendar for 1 hour on Sunday that you could commit to children ages birth to 3 years old. This nursery ministry is needed for parents, grandparents and our church growth. Please help by contacting Regina Filmore at rfilmore@mitchellgrocery.com, cell 572-8991, home 728-8877, or in person at church.
Matthew 19:14 Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these." |

So if you have a child about to enter kindergarten or who may even be in high school or any age in between, all ages are eligible to attend summer camp and it is a blast!
The cost this year for campers to attend is $275, for a week of fun, excitement and exploring God's Word and growing in a relationship with Him! Not to mention all the friends you make! Day campers (Pre-K thru 3rd grade) is $100 and Mom-n-Me is $90 so you can see there is quite an expense. PRAYER FOR BLESSING FRIENDS
Gracious God, I ask your blessing on all my friends who have given of their own heart and soul to deepen and strengthen my own. I pray especially for those who have walked alongside me when I have not been a faithful friend myself. When I feel alone, remind me that my friends are one your greatest gifts of grace to me. Let me be to them what they are to me. I ask this for the sake of your love. Amen. Copyright ©1999-2008 explorefaith.org
