Greetings!
Don't forget to join us in the Fellowship Hall at 10 a.m. on Sunday to particiapte in our Natural Church Development Focus Group. Everyone is invited and encouraged to attend!
16If I proclaim the gospel, this gives me no ground for boasting, for an obligation is laid on me, and woe to me if I do not proclaim the gospel! 17For if I do this of my own will, I have a reward; but if not of my own will, I am entrusted with a commission. 18What then is my reward? Just this: that in my proclamation I may make the gospel free of charge, so as not to make full use of my rights in the gospel. 19For though I am free with respect to all, I have made myself a slave to all, so that I might win more of them. 20To the Jews I became as a Jew, in order to win Jews. To those under the law I became as one under the law (though I myself am not under the law) so that I might win those under the law. 21To those outside the law I became as one outside the law (though I am not free from God's law but am under Christ's law) so that I might win those outside the law. 22To the weak I became weak, so that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all people, that I might by all means save some. 23I do it all for the sake of the gospel, so that I may share in its blessings. 1 Corinthians 9:16-23
As we continue to explore God's call and our response, today we turn our attention to Paul's response to God's call that he preach the gospel. This passage comes after a lengthy discussion an argument within the Corinthian Church over whether they could eat meat offered to idols. Some said they were free to do whatever they wanted since through Christ they were granted freedom from the law. Besides, idols are the real, so no harm no foul. Others felt like it was a temptation and a breaking of law to eat the meat. Paul instead calls on them to be aware of the struggles of those who are weaker and more prone to temptation.
Some among the Corinthians had apparently called into question Paul's credentials as an apostle. His unwillingness to let them feed and house him was seen as a sign that he was not a true apostle. After all, Jesus had said that his laborers deserved to be paid (Luke 10 among others). But Paul disagrees and points out that he is experiencing true freedom not by demanding his rights but by relinquishing them.
- As someone who struggled with her call to preach, I am struck by his comment, "Woe to me if I do not proclaim the gospel!" In the end, I responded to God's call because I came to the same conclusion! What does Paul's observation mean to all baptized Christians?
- We hear lots of talk in our country about our individual rights? What does Paul's teaching have to say to Christians in America today?
- Paul said that he became "all things to all people" so that some might be saved.
o What does it mean to be all things to all people? o What does that mean we should be willing to give up? o What, if anything, should we hold on to?
See you Sunday as we continue to explore more ways to respond to God's call!

2009 CONFIRMATION CLASS
Each year, an opportunity is given for our young people to spend some time studying what it means to be a follower of Christ and a member of Christ's body, the Church. At the end of this special time of studying, questioning, and exploring, youth are given the opportunity to make a profession or reaffirmation of their faith. Classes will begin in early February and those in the Confirmation Class who choose to affirm their faith will be received into membership of the Church on Pentecost Sunday, May 31st. If you would like your youth (ages 10 and up) to be involved in this class, please let me know so I can begin planning. If you have questions about confirmation and what it means, please feel free to e-mail me and you can also learn more here.
Please begin to keep our 2009 Confirmation Class in your prayers.

Mark you calendars for April 16-18 for this very important weekend!
The goals for this weekend are to help middle school youth, their parents and adult workers with youth to: grow in their understanding of sex as an important part of the divine plan for human beings. expand their knowledge of the physical and emotional facts about their sexuality and their sexual development through puberty, as the basis for developing positive attitudes. discover and practice appropriate language and communication skills needed to talk meaningfully, both within the family circle and in other responsible settings, about sex, dating, love and marriage. explore their attitudes toward themselves, especially toward the sexual dimensions of their lives. understand some of the range of possibilities of personal lifestyles and modes of relating to other people. explore some of the attitudes which govern their interactions with other persons who relate to them In various ways (i.e. Parents, Peers). understand the meaning of the teenager's emergence from parental controls and his assuming responsibility for his own freedom. examine the standards youth and adults choose as the guidelines for their lives, from among the many choices made available today by our culture choose for themselves guidelines for sexual and interpersonal behavior which reflect the best ethical thinking of the Christian community.

WE NEED YOU!!!
NATURAL CHURCH DEVELOPMENT
Our church is currently participating in Natural Church Development (NCD), a long-term process for strengthening the health and effectiveness of our church. This process began with a survey, taken by 30 people who worship regularly at New Life, which identified our church's strengths and weaknesses. We have received the results of the survey and are ready to take the next step in the NCD process. This next step involves gathering groups of New Life worshippers together to discuss and give feedback on the quality characteristic identified by the survey as New Life's weakest. We want everyone to participate in these focus groups, so mark your calendar for Sunday, February 8th at 10:00 am (during Sunday School) in the Fellowship Hall.

Nursery workers needed
There is still a great need for volunteers in the nursery. Sunday, February 1, we were blessed to provide child care in both traditional and contemporary services. This is a wonderful ministry that requires only 1 hour of your Sunday. There are openings for traditional, Sunday school and contemporary. Please search your calendar for 1 hour on Sunday that you could commit to children ages birth to 3 years old. This nursery ministry is needed for parents, grandparents and our church growth. Please help by contacting Regina Filmore at rfilmore@mitchellgrocery.com, cell 572-8991, home 728-8877, or in person at church.
Matthew 19:14 Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these." |
PRAYER FOR BLESSING FRIENDS
Gracious God, I ask your blessing on all my friends who have given of their own heart and soul to deepen and strengthen my own. I pray especially for those who have walked alongside me when I have not been a faithful friend myself. When I feel alone, remind me that my friends are one your greatest gifts of grace to me. Let me be to them what they are to me. I ask this for the sake of your love. Amen. Copyright ©1999-2008 explorefaith.org
