Greetings!
The end of the year is a wonderful time for evaluating the past year and looking forward to a new one. At our Church Council meeting on Tuesday of last week, we took time to celebrate the many ways we had seen God at work at New Life during the past year and then on Wednesday night our Natural Church Development (NCD) Church Health Team met with our coach to look at what we can do to strengthen the ministries of New Life in the coming year!
NCD began when someone started to ask what characteristics growing churches held in common. Churches all over the world, of all different sizes, traditions, and styles, were surveyed and eight characteristics were identified that they all held in common. The NCD process allows a congregation to look at itself and identify which of those 8 characteristics is their weakest and then to work together to improve that area. A month or so ago, we surveyed 30 members of the congregation to determine what is called our "minimum factor" and what we discovered is that the area that we most need to work on in 2009 is gift-based ministry-or simply having the right people properly trained in the right positions. After the beginning of the year, the entire congregation will have the opportunity to participate in focus groups to explore the issue. In the meantime, we already had plans in place that relate to the issue:
Saturday Jan 10 9 a.m.-12 p.m. Church Council Training (All members of the church council are asked to attend) Saturday Jan 24 8:30 a.m.-12 p.m. Every member in
Ministry Training Fri &Sat Feb 6&7 time TBD Spiritual Gifts Training
Thanks to the Servants Like Jesus Team at the North Alabama Conference, we were given a grant for the materials to help each of us to identify our Spiritual Gifts and then to explore where we can best put them to use in the life and ministry of this congregation. Please put the evening of Feb. 6th and the morning and afternoon of the 7th on your calendar and plan to attend. Even if you have completed an inventory before, it will be a great opportunity to learn more about each other and how those gifts can be used to strengthen the Body of Christ. More details will follow soon!
Also don't forget -- This Sunday are children will lead us in worship as we explore the meaning of Christmas through their "Joyland" program! We'll meet at 10 a.m. for a joint worship service. I hope to see you all there and remember to bring a new toy to help bring joy to some child's Christmas!

Christmas Stars are on the Christmas Trees at both banks here in Grant.
Each Christmas Star has a wish list attached to it for a child in need tis Christmas. For some of these children, this is mostly all they will recieve for Christmas this year. The average spendature is between $100.00 and $150.00 per child. Leave gifts un-wrapped and place them in a large bag with their star attached to it. These bags should be returned to the church no later than Friday, December 19. |

2009 CONFIRMATION CLASS
Each year, an opportunity is given for our young people to spend some time studying what it means to be a follower of Christ and a member of Christ's body, the Church. At the end of this special time of studying, questioning, and exploring, youth are given the opportunity to make a profession or reaffirmation of their faith. Classes will begin in early February and those in the Confirmation Class who choose to affirm their faith will be received into membership of the Church on Pentecost Sunday, May 31st. If you would like your youth (ages 10 and up) to be involved in this class, please let me know so I can begin planning. If you have questions about confirmation and what it means, please feel free to e-mail me and you can also learn more here.
Please begin to keep our 2009 Confirmation Class in your prayers.

YOUTH PROGRESSIVE CHRISTMAS DINNER will be December 14 beginning at 530PM!!
The youth are planning their annual Progressive Christmas dinner. The Senior high and Junior high will have separate parties and therefore each group will need approximately 3 homes to host part of the progressive dinner. If anyone is interested in hosting one of these groups please call Virginia Robinson 728-8852 or the Church Office 728-2093.
Each youth should bring a gift with a value of approx. $10.00.

Bishop's Message
Each week, Bishop Willimon writes a message to the people of the North Alabama Conference. I felt like I shoudl share this week's message on effective congregations. From time to time, I will share his messages with you. However, you can subscribe to his weekly messages (as well as other Conference newsletters) by clicking here.
Pastor Sherill
Earlier this year our Conference Lay Leader, Ellen Harris and I participated in a conversation, with Jurisdictional leaders on what makes for an effective congregation.
What are some of the main characteristic of a growing, effective church? I thought they devised a fascinating list. How does your congregation embody, or conflict with, these characteristic?
EFFECTIVE CONGREGATIONS:
Love their particularly community. Their pastors have found a way not only to love their congregations but also their neighborhood. Effective pastors help their congregations move beyond love of themselves, turning their congregations outward.
Rise above mere contentment with things as they are and do what is necessary to expect and welcome change, disruption, and movement, similar to that of the Risen Christ.
Find a way to welcome the stranger and to practice radical hospitality in the name of Jesus Christ. They find a way to be as interested in those who have yet to join the church as those already in the church.
Have a clear sense of their primary purpose and keep focused on their primary God-given missions.
Enable lay leaders to lead, not just manage. Lay leadership that feels a strong sense of responsibility for the future of their congregation.
All have a strong, change oriented, gifted pastor.
Make growth a priority and figure out how to grow.
Keep focused upon Jesus Christ as the originator of, and the purpose for the church (rather than church as just another human oriented institution). How does your church answer to these qualities of effective churches? What specific steps would your congregation need to take to live into the future in a different way?

Weekly Prayer
Gracious God, there's so much waiting in my life. I wait in lines, I wait for a better job, I wait for others, I wait for financial security, I wait for a doctor's report, I wait for love, I wait for pain to abate, and I even wait for death. Sometimes the waiting erodes my joy and fills me with dread. Help me find waiting to be the friend that invites me into the spaciousness of stillness. Give me the grace to refrain from rushing ahead in order to bring waiting to an end. Instead, let me find joy in the waiting itself. I ask this for the sake of your love. Amen. |
