Welcome to the 2nd edition of The New Mexico Movie News by crewnewmexico.com!
We're thrilled by the positive response we received from the first edition of The New Mexico Movie News - and we're back for round 2! From many a "thank you," to new crew and vendors coming on board our site, we're glad we hit the mark.
This month's New Mexico Movie News is sponsored by
Filmmaker Production Services Company. The October2008 opening of their Property, Drapery, and Costume House in Albuquerque was an acknowledgement of the
strong state of film in New Mexico, and a vote of confidence in its future.
We'd like to give a
special welcome to FPSC, and invite you to contact them for
more information, product, or a tour. Of course, be sure to tell them, and all our advertisers, that you heard about them through crewnewmexico.com or The Movie News!
The fall production schedule in New Mexico has really picked up after a slow summer. Film has never been a predictable industry, yet New Mexico continues to lead the way in terms of stable incentives and growing infrastructure. Other incentive-offering states are hitting hard times due to poor planning or lack of oversight, and we're proud to say that New Mexico continues to set the bar for reliability and visibility, and is having a busy back-end to this year.
With nearly 600 cast, crew and film-supporting vendors in our directory and 10,000 site visitors/month, we can firmly say it's our pleasure to serve each and every one of you. Whether you're considering filming here, already shooting, or need support for any element of your project, feel free to contact us at any time.
Enjoy!

Big Hollywood Comes to Albuquerque The October 2008 opening of Filmmaker Production Services Company in Albuquerque was a milestone for the local film industry, bringing a large-scale production support company to New Mexico for the first time. FPSC is a 25,000 sq. ft. warehouse filled with the largest prop, drapery and costume selection in New Mexico. For Props, their inventory features hand props, furniture, fixtures and drapery for all your set dressing needs. In Costume, their collection includes men's and women's costumes, contemporary clothing and evening wear, uniforms, jackets, shoes, costume expendables and accessories. With about 200,000 items on site, and access to their LA inventory, FPSC can fulfill nearly every production request - and they ship to productions nationwide. In just one year in business, they've already served dozens of productions, including Breaking Bad, Crash, In Plain Sight, Book of Eli, MacGruber, Paul, The Resident, Men Who Stare At Goats, and Georgia O'Keefe. Says Beverly Hadley, director of Filmmaker Production Services, "We're excited to be part of the rapidly developing New Mexico filmmaking community. Our wide selection and high level of customer service is designed to match the tight schedule of a film or television production." That and their carefully chosen location just north of downtown and a quick trip to ABQ Studios helps productions run more smoothly. And their excellent management team keeps FPSC as a key element of many productions. The FPSC facility also has a conference room, workroom and dressing room available for rent. The Company also provides a unique venue for special events.

New Accounting Rules for the New Mexico Film Incentive Program
On September 11, 2009, Governor Bill Richarson's office announced the introduction of a new program to help provide greater transparency in the New Mexico Film Incentive process. In light of some recent abuses of incentives in Iowa, these come at a newsworthy time.New Mexico has the most trusted and stable incentive program in the country, and these new changes show the confidence we have in our current procedures. Under the new guidelines, production companies that request a tax credit will
be required to provide the New Mexico Film Office with detailed information
regarding the expenses submitted to qualify for the credit. Previously this
data had only been provided to the New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department
where by law it must be kept confidential. Under the new policy, the film
office will provide aggregate totals in specific categories for all film and
television productions on a fiscal year basis.
By providing aggregate totals, proprietary industry information will remain confidential while still providing the public greater insight into how the tax credits are being applied, and to show the validity of the credit requests. To enforce the new rules, the New Mexico Tax and Revenue Department is creating a new film unit consisting of four auditors and a supervisor who will receive specialized training in production practices and terminology.Says Rick Homans, Secretary of the New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department, "Our auditors will talk the industry language, visit
the sets and understand the complexity of the film and digital media business. The goal is to be open and friendly to the film industry and, at the same
time, maintain accountability and a clear set of rules and expectations.
The reporting categories are as follows:
1. Total dollar amount spent in New Mexico (including NM labor) 2. Total dollar amount spent in NM on: a. NM Crew (all NM crew: director, producers, writer, technical crew,
security) b. NM Talent (principals and background) c. New Mexico
facility/property rental: stage space, production office, location fees d. NM lodging/accommodations e. NM food (catering, craft service,
other) f. NM rental vehicles/non-film vehicles g. NM "rolling
equipment" rentals (trucks, trailers, cranes, picture cars) h. NM film
equipment rentals (grip, lighting, camera, other) i. NM construction
costs (lumber, hardware, supplies, other) j. NM set dressing k. NM wardrobe l. NM special effects/props.

Desert Sky Communications was started by Jane Blume in 1989, and is New Mexico Business Weekly's 12th-ranked PR film in New Mexico. Having a clear and present voice in the media is critical for any business, so we're happy to present some tips from one of New Mexico's most well-known media networkers.Jane is offering a free consultation (up to 1 hour) for any business that's listed on crewnewmexico.com!Q: There are a lot of new
businesses opening in New Mexico hoping to capitalize on the film industry.
What would be your advice to them as they enter the local market?
A: Understand your uniqueness -- what makes you different/uniquely qualified to do what
you do? Be highly visible to your target audience and do a lot of
networking - that's how business is done here. Don't perform services you're not qualified for - unless you disclose your weaknesses and agree to perform for at big discount or free of charge. Under-promise and over-deliver. Q: Tell us a little bit
about Desert Sky Communications.
A: Desert Sky
Communications is New Mexico Business Weekly's #12-ranked PR firm for this
state. We provide a broad range of services to help our clients gain visibility
and recognition for the great work that they do, and "get the right
messages to the right audiences."
Q: What services could you provide to a production?
A: Media relations: news
releases; feature story and interview ideas for the print and broadcast media;
news conferences; crisis communications.
Q: How about film-supporting
businesses or other New Mexico small businesses?
A:
The same as for a production, and then some! We
also provide writing and editing services including news releases, brochures,
company fact sheets, and websites. We assist with corporate identity
(graphic design for logos, brochures, print ads, etc.), as well as broadcast
and print advertising, customer surveys, photographic services,
website maintenance and design and special events.
