Summer Safety Tips

  Nearly 70 percent of Americans, according to the American Red Cross, have been involved in some kind of summer emergency, ranging from insect bites to heat stroke and other life-threatening situations.

But what can you do if you find yourself facing a summer emergency?

HOW TO RECOGNIZE HEAT STROKE

SYMPTOMS

If they have a body temperature above 103 degrees Farenheit, red, hot dry skin, and there's no sweating -- which means that the body's sweating mechanism is failing, and the body is unable to cool down. If the person has a rapid strong pulse, headache, dizziness or nausea -- call 911 and get the victim to a shady area in the meantime. Try to cool the victim rapidly using whatever methods you can like spraying them with cool water from a hose.

* Body temp > 103°F

* Red/hot/dry skin

* No sweating

* Rapid pulse

* Headache/dizziness/nausea

HOW TO ALLEVIATE SUNBURN

There's no fast "cure" for sunburns -- it may take days for your skin to heal. To treat the pain, take an over-the-counter pain reliever and keep the area moisturized with aloe or other lotions. Keep the skin cool by using cold compresses or taking a cold bath. Keep in mind that there is no such thing as a "healthy tan." Unprotected sun exposure causes premature aging of the skin

HOW TO IDENTIFY POISONOUS PLANTS

A good rule of thumb is "leaves of three, let it be." Poison oak and ivy usually are clustered in leaves of three. They contain an oil that when gets on your skin can cause an allergic reaction. You only need to be exposed to a very, very little of this poisonous oil -- less than one grain of table salt -- for it to develop a rash. If you do get it on your skin, immediately rinse skin with rubbing alcohol or a degreasing soap like dishwashing soap and lots of water. Rinse frequently so that wash solutions do not dry on the skin and further spread the urushiol. An antihistamine can be taken to help relieve itching.

REMOVING

 AN INSECT STINGER

NEVER squeeze the area or use tweezers because it may push more venom into the skin. Remove the stinger by either scraping your fingernail over the area or using a straight edge like a credit card. You want to wash the area with soap and water -- if there's swelling, apply ice. Try not to scratch because it may cause an infection.

Happy Summer!

Thank you Andrea!

Letter from the "New" Editor
Greetings!

I wanted to take a minute to introduce myself as the newly appointed editor of the "Coppersmith Lew's News" newsletter. I joined the Coppersmith family four years ago as Logistics/Sales Assistant in SFO. As some of you may know, I am the name behind salesquotes. Writing has always been a passion of mine. I like researching trivia and fun facts. Its an exciting opportunity for me to be able to bring new and entertaining features to this publication. I hope you enjoy the upcoming newsletters.

Management Tips
Performance Review Checklist

Keep Your Cool When Getting Feedback

No one likes to hear that they aren't performing well. Yet, everyone can improve. Next time you receive constructive feedback, do these three things:

  Relax- It's understandable to be nervous during a feed back session. The other person holds all the power. Accept this imbalance and be easy on yourself.

Expect to be Surprised - You are likely to hear something you were not aware of. Perhaps something was a bigger deal than you thought, or something you thought was resolved wasn't.

  Don't Be Defensive- Even if you diagree hold your tongue.Instead of defending yourself ask questions. Once you have cooled down you can follow up.

Recipe Box- Cool Summer Idea
Crabby Sandwich
Crabby Sandwich

Hungry kids will dig right into this tasty lunchtime fare, perfect for beach parties, picnics, and more.

Serves= One (Make as many as you want !)

Ingredients

  • 1 croissant
  • Sandwich filling (anything you like!)
  • 6 baby carrots (or sub pretzel sticks)
  • 2 toothpicks
  • 1 black olive
  • 2 cream cheese balls (1/2-inch)
  • 1 red bell pepper (or sub strawberry pieces)
  • 1 radish

 Instructions

  1. Slit open the outside edge of a croissant, as shown, and stuff it with sandwich filling.*

  2. Tuck six baby carrots into the sides to form legs.

  3. Slide two 1/2-inch balls of cream cheese onto toothpicks, top each with a black olive slice, and stick them in place as shown.

  4. Snip off the tips of the croissant and slide a red bell pepper claw into each end.

  5. Finish the crab by attaching a radish slice smile with a dab of cream cheese.

Tips:
We used crab salad in our sandwich, but chicken or tuna salad, ham and cheese, and PB&J also make delicious fillers.

Welcome mat

 Lets give a big "Coppersmith Welcome!" to Barbara Herring in our ATL Office!

Barbara joined our company family on May 9th 2012 as an Account Executive/Business Development Manager!

Barbara was born in Denver, CO, and raised in Fort Lauderdale, FL.

She began her industry experience in wholesale liquors, importing rare vintage wines brokered out of the U.K.

She worked for Susanne Fontana, located in the Miami Foreign Trade Zone, managing customs brokerage, freight forwarding, warehouse, trucking and a trading company.

Barbara took that knowledge and went to work for Circle International as Branch Manager and oversaw the Customs Brokerage and Ocean Export Division. She has been involved in sales for over 19 years having transferred to Atlanta in 1992 to take over sales in the SE region.

After Circle, Barbara took the position as Director of Imports with Surf Air. She assisted them with expansion from a domestic to an international arena. Future Forwarding, a UK based company in ATL, gave her the opportunity to open an office and assume the role of Sales Director. She quickly became VP of Sales and Operations and part owner of the company.

Barbara has traveled extensively in China as well as to Hong Kong, Korea, Taiwan, Latin America and Europe. She has sold and developed many internationally known company accounts including Georgia Pacific, Acer, and Phillips Electronics.

Barbara says, "Personally, I like sales because I really like people and learning about different cultures."

Barbara lives in the country, with Tim, her husband of 28 years. She enjoys time in their cabin on a private lake with her three grown children, two grandsons and pets.

Thanks for sharing with us Barbara!

Be sure to drop Barbara a welcome email and wish her success in her new position!

Vacation Journal...
Travel Journal

  June...when most of us are starting to think about , or already have, summer vacation plans in place. I remember my childhood summer vacation in the small resort town of Guerneville, in Northern California. We would stay  week or two. Days were spent on the beaches of the Russian River, floating around the river in an inner-tube, browsing the town's only drug store, seeing a movie at the theater, and playing ping pong in the lodge's rec center. By day's end I would be a lobster from the sun and it was off to the drug store for Noxema and Bactine.

As an adult I have made better vacation memories in England. I have a weird vacation tale. I had purchased a small painting of a street in a local garage sale. Almost two years later I turned a corner while on vacation and was stunned to happen across the very location. My husband didnt believe me. I took a picture, framing it as I remembered the painting. Took it home, put them side by side. Identical! Except for the time period.

Do you have any childhood vacation memories  or travel tales to share? email me and I can include them in our summer editions!

I hope you enjoyed the bit of fun and facts in this, my first newsletter publication...until next month!

Sincerely,
