Greetings!

Spring is here and AFIN has many projects in the works. Volunteers make these projects possible and all our volunteers deserve special recognition. Here's an update on a few of the projects A Friend in Need is working on and some much due recognition for our Volunteer of the Year, Brian Lucas.
Brian Lucas
Volunteer of the Year
Occupation: Packaging Engineer
Milwaukee, WI

AFIN: With your busy job, how do you find time to volunteer?

BL: Well, I just do. I feel that helping the kids and families is more important than my day-to-day issues. Thankfully, I don't have to worry about my next meal or if I will make it through another day. So whenever I can do something for AFIN I do it.

AFIN: How did you first get involved with AFIN?

BL: I knew someone who was working on huts for an AFIN fundraiser and I volunteered to help. That was 3 years ago & we're still using those huts today.

AFIN: Those huts really make AFIN fundraisers special. What's your most memorable fundraiser?

BL: We held a fundraiser at the Kemper Center. We literally had a small village by the time we were done. It was pretty cool to see what all the volunteers were able to build with what little supplies we had.

AFIN: Any thoughts for the next AFIN fundraiser?

BL: Something fun where I can build something again!! I have given myself the title of "builder" in the group and while others come up with the ideas I do what I can to bring them to life. I will do whatever I can to help with any event big or small.

AFIN: What can you tell people who may be thinking of volunteering with AFIN?

BL: Do it! AFIN has brought me a lot of happiness, knowing I am doing good and helping others who can't help themselves. Not to mention all the incredible people I have had the joy of getting to know.

Fill The Pack!
Supply America's Future
AFIN is helping America's children by giving them the supplies they need to succeed in school. A Friend in Need's "Fill the Pack! Supply America's Future" campaign brings school supplies to kids in need.

With today's economy, many families can not afford required basic school supplies like pencils, paper and markers. Last year, over a thousand children in Racine, WI lined up to receive school supplies through a city program. Hundreds were turned away because there were not enough supplies. A Friend in Need was contacted and helped deliver additional backpacks.

When a child receives a backpack, their face lights up. They are so happy knowing that on the first day of school they will be like all of the other children in their class. They have more confidence and are eager to learn.  More importantly, they know that someone cares about them and wants them to succeed.

Now we're planning for the 2010-2011 school year. We're forming relationships with vendors who will help secure the best pricing on school supplies so we can reach more children. But we need your help!

Just $12 can bring a backpack filled with supplies to a student who otherwise has none.

Service Project
A Friend in Need has a special service project for your kids at school.

Brenda Rebro, Executive Director of A Friend in Need, Inc. will visit your school and share her first hand experiences of communities that don't have basic needs like clean water, food and shelter; and then work on a plan for the students to help those communities in need.

This service project is designed to empower students to become productive citizens by sharing their talents and addressing the needs of those around them.

If you would like the students at your child's school to participate, please contact us at info@helpafriendinneed.org
