Where in the World is Kapunga?
Written by: Brenda Rebro

In an effort to find out how we can answer the biblical mandate to care for orphans and widows, co-founder, Heather Bliss and I just returned from a two-week visit to the continent of Africa.  While there, we stayed in Nelspruit, South Africa with an organization called Hands at Work.  This past year, A Friend in Need provided food distribution and holistic care kits to Hands at Work to distribute to the orphans in Africa.

After spending a week in South Africa, we took a 4 hour drive to Kapunga Swaziland. Swaziland is a mountainous country, slightly smaller than the state of New Jersey, and is home to just over 1 million people.  Because the HIV prevelancy rate is over 38%, many adults are dying and leaving a generation to parent themselves.  Forty percent of the population is under the age of fifteen (compare that to twenty percent in the U.S.)

Up on a mountain in Kapunga, we met Nomsa, a compassionate woman trying to make a difference to the orphans in her small community.  For two days we walked the mountain with her, visiting children orphaned by AIDS.  We met two beautiful girls, Noxalo (11) and Nothando (13).

Their mother had died in 2004 and their father in 2006.  Because the girls are more concerned with where their next meal will come from, Nothando couldn't even remember her own birthday.  Although it may seems like such a trivial thing, it breaks our hearts to see children who aren't free to simply be children and anticipate their upcoming birthday. These children must struggle to survive every day.

Watch for our next newsletter to learn how you can help orphans like Noxalo and Nothando. In the meantime, click here to see more pictures.
