Get Organized for Fall

Samantha Naeyaert, Vice President

Samantha Naeyaert, President

The lazy days of Summer are approaching their end and it's time to find our motivation to organize ourselves and our clients for the upcoming school year!

I attended a wonderfully informational technical course called The Digital Divide at the NAPO Conference in San Diego this year and feel that this is a good time share some of my favorite technological choices and theirs to help all of us gain time and efficiency through technology.

  • Save time and possible backup issues by getting a desktop back up system  - I recommend the My Passport Essential  portable drive system
  • Save time and possible backup issues by getting an online backup service as well - here are a few recommendations from NAPO conference this year -  Mozy, Carbonite, Crashplan (the technical folks decided that Crash Plan seemed like the best choice).
  • Save time by managing notes/documents via Smart Phone and/or iPad - the front runner by the 3-person team was Evernote
  • Be safe by using a password safe keeper like - Lastpass or  Splashid (easiest)
  • Save time and be organized with your recipes and shopping lists - I use Fooducate and the technical team recommended Epicurious, everyday food, or plummelow.com (create your own shopping list)
  • Start scanning with the NeatDesk organizer - I love the software that is built in and how quickly one can get recipes, documents, invoices and contacts organized, for the Mac or PC!

To recommend or share your thoughts on these choices,

please go to our new Facebook Business page www.Facebook.com/napodfw and start a conversation. I'd love to hear from you!

I hope everyone can make it and bring a friend to the August 25th chapter meeting full of ideas on how to help our clients homes get and stay organized during the school year!

Are you a part of our NAPO - DFW Facebook group? If you are, then you also know we now have a Facebook Business Page! While the group page is only for chapter members, the business page will allow us to reach professional organizers who may not know about our chapter. It will also inform the general public about our public events and get the word out about our awesome Corporate Partners. This page is a great way to keep our clients aware of our professional affiliation and what our chapter is doing.

You can find our business page at http://facebook.com/napodfw. See you there!

Please welcome our new members!

For those of you who prefer not to deal with reality, go back to your book on the beach and stop reading this immediately!

Don't hate us, but we gotta bring this up. School is only weeks--for some of you it could be days-- away and with that comes the hustle and much dreaded bustle of inputting non -down-loadable PDF school forms into the calendar. We know what you're thinking: "Stop the bus, please, I want off at the next stop."

If you're like me, you have no recollection of the beginning of school last year; it was nothing short of a blissful race from back-to-school night to meet-the-teacher to buy-the-team-uniform and way more fun than I ever dreamed. Before I knew it, my online calendar was filled with electronic sticky notes and my email inundated with more data than ever.

This year, I'm determined to do things a little differently. I pledge to get all my children's school dates on the calendar as they are sent to me. I feel the need to declare this publicly, in front of my organizing pals, so I'm held accountable, in much the same way I might publicly declare I'm giving up sugar for the afternoon (hey, I'd like to actually achieve my goal.)

This year, I'll be using PlumLife's bulk entry system to enter all the team schedules and meetings that can't be automatically down loaded into my calendar. I know, I know...yes, I work for this great online calendar company so why haven't I used this feature before? Well, for the same reason my good friend who's worked for The Container Store for 20 years doesn't have a house that's uh, contained.

Designed like an excel spreadsheet, I'm able to easily enter recurring practices for my children, staff meetings at work or volunteer commitments. I've already begun the process of recording my oldest son's football practice by going to my calendar tab, clicking on the "create" and then the "bulk entry" buttons on the left hand column of the calendar and filling in the information. And just like a spreadsheet, PlumLife's bulk e

ntry will auto fill the next line with the same information until I change, in this case, the date. Once I've finished recording all his practices, the dates are automatically put on my calendar AND my son's calendar. What used to take me an hour to do, now only takes me about 10 minutes. Presto chango! I'm finished in no time at all!

So now that I've publicly made the pledge to get all the miscellany into my PlumLife, I'm counting on all you experts to hold me to it. But could you give me til the end of September to git er dun?
