SCRAP Board Report
| Happy New Year!
Welcome back to SCRAP. Thanks to all for the staffing, volunteering, and supporting you have done for this scrappy little organization over the last year. We have tackled some big jobs and can be proud of the accomplishments. To celebrate, the Board brought in the holiday season with a party for the staff in early December. Then the staff turned around and spent two weeks putting a shine on the warehouse for the start of the new year. And for the first time ever, we set board and community giving goals and came "this" close to reaching our target.
We are looking for a few good board candidates and have meetings with the SFUSD, the Green Community, and the Arts Commission lined up. We want a school district administrator to help us get more materials into the classrooms, an environ-mentalist that can influence the number of tons of waste we divert, and an artist to show SCRAP the art scene. Let us know if you can point us to a potential board member.
| Lots going on at SCRAP as usual. Put the "I HEART SCRAP" day on your calendar (2/12/12), see you then.

Greetings!
Happy New Year! I wish you and your loved ones a great start to your year filled with love, laughter and joy. If you have New Years resolutions to create more art, to learn more crafting skills, to volunteer more or to be inspired more, we're always here to help.
Here are a couple of my New Years Resolutions for SCRAP:
To divert more materials from the landfill
To recruit more volunteers to help us sort, organize, roll fabric and more
To provide more amazing art workshops
To host more field trips
To give away more materials at our Teacher Give Aways
To go to more outreach events and inspire more creativity
To gather the SCRAP community together more often, filling SCRAP with laughter, creation and collaboration
We're off to a great start:
More material donations are coming in everyday.
We've gotten some great new volunteers, but if you're interested, we definitely need more help sorting through all the materials that come through our doors. Click here to volunteer.
We have five incredible art workshops scheduled for this month and next. Sign up here.
We would love to host more field trips: please email me if you're interested in bringing your students to SCRAP
We will do more outreach to teachers to tell them about our Give Aways, but please continue to tell all the SF teachers that you know about them.
We have several outreach events in the works, look out for more details in our quicklook later this month
We have an I Heart SCRAP party planned for February 12th, complete with crafts, food carts, live band and more. RSVP on Facebook to let us know that you are coming. And while you are at it, follow us to be updated on new finds, workshops and events.
Looking forward to an amazing 2012,
Shuai Chen

Lost & Found Mosaics II w/ Jane Schafgans
January 14th, 10am to 4pm January 15th, 1-4pm (note this is a weekend workshop, Sat & Sun)
two day workshop fee: $70
Jane Schafgans is back by popular demand to share her wonderful mosaic techniques once again. In this weekend workshop participants will use SCRAP as their treasure trove as well as bring special items from home; beloved broken bits of favorite pottery or keepsakes or other objects, to create whimsical and dynamic mosaic works. Lost art and treasures can be found again and given new life!
On Saturday participants will create and layout their designs and devise their route of assemblage. Then Jane will show techniques for applying tile and treasures to their surfaces. On Sunday participants will grout and finish their mosaics.
About Jane
Jane has been working with mosaics for over eight years. The minute she learned how to work in this medium, she fell in love with it. Jane likes to work with color, both in glass and tile. She loves how it enhances any space it occupies. Jane's work is primarily privately owned, with the exception of some permanent installations at Lakeshore, Claire Lilienthal, and Gordon Lau Elementary Schools, where she has worked extensively with elementary school children.

By the end of the day participants will have the first few blocks of their quilt done or a small top ready to be made into a sandwich and quilted. Included in the workshop will be information for how to quilt and bind these small masterpieces. Please bring a sewing machine if you have one and if you do not we will have a couple available for use. About Kenan Kenan has been making quilts for 17 years. Project Accessorize w/ emiko oye & Shana Astrachan
Saturday, February 25th
10am to 4pm fee: $60
Fearless alt craft duo, emiko oye and Shana Astrachan of Accessorize with Toys are back once again with another specially designed project for SCRAP's jewelry fans: PROJECT ACCESSORIZE. Taking cues from the reality series, Project Runway and Project Accessory, in this full-day workshop participants will design, "shop" for materials, and create a one-of-a-kind, personalized art jewelry piece using techniques presented in class. Participants are asked to bring with them a personal treasure from home that is the inspiration point to be the central object of focus for their jewelry. Shana and emiko will guide individuals through the creative process to "Make it Work", sharing techniques for working with alternative materials and local resources. Included in this all-day workshop will be an artist presentation on their work, Q&A session, and group critique/brainstorming session to inspire making beyond the classroom.
About emiko & Shana emiko oye and Shana Astrachan are professional jewelry artists working with alternative/repurposed materials, encouraging others to experience the beauty of making and reuse. Longstanding members of the Metal Arts Guild Society of North American Goldsmiths, and the Metal Art Critique Collective, their jewelry can be found in museums, galleries, and publications. Their work was recently published in Metalsmith Magazine's Exhibition in Print issue. Accessorize with Toys workshops have served countless, enthusiastic makers-to-be since 2006, at venues such as MakerFaire, Renegade Craft Fair, and California Academy of Sciences NightLife.
