Greetings!
September sure was busy at SCRAP! We had two amazing workshops, a large clean up, a couple of great outreach events, our first monthly Teacher Give-away of the year, our SFAI City Studio class started and SCRAPPY Sunday, our friend- and fund-raiser was a big hit. We've started taking credit cards, our outreach coordinator just started, we hired ourselves a new Warehouse Coordinator, and five amazing new members were voted into SCRAP's Board of Directors.
October is looking to be just as great! We already hosted our October Teacher Give-away (by the way, if you know any San Francisco teachers, please tell them to come to SCRAP on the first Saturdays of each month from 1PM to 4PM for all kinds of materials!). We have a couple of fun outreach events planned, two great workshops, several group volunteering events, our SFUSD field trips are beginning and our board is having a retreat.
We're also going to try two new programs: fabric rolling volunteer team (come by SCRAP Tuesday afternoons to roll fabric with other amazing volunteers) and drop in jewelry making with Susan Solstice (just come by SCRAP sometime between noon and 2PM on Mondays to learn how to repurpose materials to make jewelry). Plus, don't forget, Halloween is on a Monday this year, so come to SCRAP for some tricks or treats along with great costume ideas and materials this year!
We're trying to move more of our inventory, like us on Facebook for updates on sales and freebies (today, zippers and National Geographics are free, outside tiles are $1).
Hope to see you at SCRAP soon,
Shuai Chen

Improv Bookmaking: Upcycling SCRAP Finds Into Handmade Kid's Books presented by Cathy Miranker
Saturday, October 22nd, 11am-4pm fee: $45
(note this is a 5-hour workshop)
Making books by hand gives kids a chance to be authors and illustrators, editors and designers, to completely invest themselves in their work. And making books from recycled materials-from stuff that's not usually part of a book-invites them to be inventors, too!
Cathy is back by popular demand with more projects for the classroom. Participants will start by learning some basic, kid-friendly book structures. Then she will take the class into the SCRAP aisles, exploring, talking about how different materials might be used in book projects and collecting intriguing items as they go. Back in the workshop, participants will conjure books from their finds. These improv books are great projects whenever you've got a large group-during rainy-day recess, PTA meetings, family literacy nights and more. This workshop is best for adults working with kids in Grades 1-8.
About Cathy
Cathy discovered bookmaking about 15 years ago and since then has been both a voracious student and a busy teacher. Ten years ago she pioneered the Youth Programs for the San Francisco Center for the Book and secured funding to bring book arts to thousands of students in the San Francisco public schools. Now she is an independent instructor and when not blogging and working with kids and teachers, she experiments with historical bindings and contemporary book forms, and makes boxes and protective enclosures to house antiquarian books and ephemera.

Join us and learn how to make simple hat forms that will be covered and decorated to make original wearable hats. Cruise the aisles at SCRAP to find the perfect art parts that will inspire your designs. How outrageous can you be?!
About Aiko Aiko has been an artist in schools for over 30 years, encouraging students to experiment, solve problems, and work collaboratively. She teaches family art workshops, classes for the Osher Life long Learning Institute, and Ruth's Table at Bethany Center. "I want my students to know that making art gives them another way to express themselves and the freedom to make choices as they use new mediums and learn different techniques. I want them to be inspired by the challenge of repurposing and reusing materials in new ways. From paper to pine cones, the variety and ever changing materials found at SCRAP ask "What can you do with a material like me?"
