Greetings!

I can't believe it's been over a month since I started. Time sure does fly when you are having fun! I wanted to let you know how much I appreciate the whole SCRAP community. We have such a creative, amazing and giving group of SCRAP supporters!

As you know, the school year starts this week for teachers. We are having our Hats Off to Teachers celebration August 20th, and I'd like to invite all our amazing educators to stock up on free classroom supplies. We will also be having our monthly teacher give-aways every first Saturday of the month during the school year for SFUSD teachers. If you don't teach, please pass the news on to your favorite teachers.

We've been trying to step up communications by posting frequently on Facebook. "Like us" (http://www.facebook.com/scrapsf) to get updates on interesting new arrivals, events and news at SCRAP. We had a camera crew come in to SCRAP to film our founder, Anne Marie Theilan, who was honored with a 2011 Jefferson Award. We posted a photo from the camera shoot right after they left. The spot will air on CBS5 at 6PM on Wednesday, so make sure to catch it! We have exciting workshops, field trips, outreach and fundraising events coming up and you can be updated as they are planned.

We are also trying to improve our web presence. So if you read an educational blog, please comment and tell them about us and our Hats Off to Teachers celebration or about the resources we have at SCRAP for teachers. If you are on an arts forum, please let all your fellow artists know about us. If you have a shop on Etsy, let your customers know that you got your materials from SCRAP. If you're into Yelp, please rate us and talk about all the great things you've found at SCRAP.

Thanks again for all of your support. Hope to see you at SCRAP soon,

Shuai Chen

As a life-long crafter and artist, Monica has been coming to SCRAP for 20 years, and many times, she doesn't get past the free section! Join us as Monica Lee, resident artist at Bethany Center's Ruth's Table, presents various creative projects from materials out of SCRAP's free section.  In this class participants can push their limits of creativity and ingenuity and challenge themselves to create delightfully fanciful or surprisingly useful things all from materials out of the free section.

About Monica

Monica Lee has been a professional photographer for 30 years and is a life long crafter. She is currently the Artist in Resident at Ruth's Table (A Center for Creative Growth Rooted in the life of artist Ruth Asawa) at the Bethany Center where she teaches art workshops using found, new, and repurposed materials for all ages in the community. Monica has taught workshops at SCRAP, San Francisco's Sunnyside Conservatory, and FabMo in Mountain View. She has volunteered for many years in the public schools working

Lost and Found Mosaics w/Jane Schafgans

Jane Schafgans Mosaic Mask

Two Saturdays -

Sept 17th 10am-4pm

Sept 24th 11am-1pm

fee: $70

It's time for mosaics! Jane is back to share her wonderful techniques and she's adding a new twist. In this two-day workshop lost art and treasures are found again and given new life! During this workshop participants will use SCRAP as a treasure trove as well as bring special things from home, beloved broken bits of favorite pottery or keepsakes or other objects, to create whimsical and dynamic mosaic works.

The first Saturday Jane will show techniques for applying tile and treasures to a variety of surfaces. Then she will help participants design and devise their route of assemblage. The second Saturday two-hour class will be devoted to the process of grouting and finishing.

About Jane

Jane has been working with mosaics for over eight years.  The minute she learned how to work in this medium, she fell in love with it. Jane likes to work with color, both in glass and tile.  She loves how it enhances any space it occupies. Jane's work is primarily privately owned, with the exception of some permanent installations at two public schools, Lakeshore and Gordon Lau Elementary Schools, where she has worked extensively with elementary school children.

Board Report July 2011 -

The SCRAP board has made great strides in building our team. Outreach in July generated an energetic, skilled, and talented pool of board nominees. We are excited by the quality of candidates and look forward to bringing on new board members in September. Our fall orientation and planning retreat is scheduled in October and next spring, we start the 3-5 year strategic plan with the SCRAP community. It's an exciting time for the board.

The board still needs stakeholder representation and we are looking for community members who represent SCRAP's major constituents. It's our goal to have a SFUSD administrator, a high profile artist, and a leader from the environmental movement serving SCRAP. For more information, contact; Jack Gold <[email protected]>

Keep an eye out for the date of our upcoming "SCRAP Sunday" where you can help us celebrate the people who have served on the board over the last 30 plus years. Our Event Committee is planning a fund and friend raiser with food trucks, art projects, workshops, special sales event, high-end supplies, and music.

See you then.
