SWEET HOME STUDENT UNION

ACUI Region 6 Conference at the Ferg Oct. 22 - 24

It's not too late to register!

Faces of the Ferg
Xin Chang
Programming Assistant, Ferguson Center
Hometown: ShenYang, China
Major: Accounting

All the way from China, Xin recently celebrated her one-year anniversary at the Ferguson Center Student Union. Every semester, Xin works hard to help coordinate exciting Ferguson Center events. Bringing her international experience to The Ferg, Xin plans monthly events for UA's international students, ranging from themed movie nights to game nights.

"We hope these events will help all international groups work together and learn about one another's cultures," Xin said.

An aspiring accountant, Xin feels that her experience at The Ferg is allowing
her the opportunity to develop the skills necessary to reach her career goals.
Following her time at UA, Xin hopes to pursue graduate studies in the U.S. But most importantly, Xin enjoys the friendships she continues to develop with her fellow staff.

"I like the people here, all of the student staff," Xin said. "They're so friendly, and I feel very comfortable here. Everyone is always smiling."

Along with organizing events at The Ferg, Xin is an active member of the Chinese Culture Club as well as an officer of the Chinese Association at UA. When Xin is not helping her fellow UA students at the Ferguson Center, you can often find her enjoying her favorite sports at the tennis courts or the pool.

Panel Discussion on the Early Days of UA's Desegregation
Panelists include Autherine Lucy Foster and James Hood

First African-Americans to enroll at UA
November 3 at 9:00 a.m. in the Ferguson Center Ballroom

Students, faculty and staff are invited to attend a panel discussion about the events leading to the desegregation of The University of Alabama.

Autherine Lucy Foster, Vivian Malone Jones and James Hood are three brave individuals who took a stand for change at a crucial time in the history of UA. Their courageous strides in 1956 and 1963 marked the beginning of UA's steady progress toward the inclusive and diverse campus we celebrate today.

Mrs. Foster, Mr. Hood and a family member of the late Vivian Malone Jones will participate in a panel discussion about UA's early movement toward desegregation Nov. 3 at 9 a.m. in the Ferguson Center Ballroom. The moderator will be Dr. E. Culpepper Clark, former dean of the College of Communication and Information Sciences and author of the book The Schoolhouse Door: Segregation's Last Stand at The University of Alabama.

Any student can submit questions prior to the event that may be included in the panel discussion. Email questions to kknox-hall@sa.ua.edu by Monday, Nov. 1.

Free tickets are available online at Crimson Arts Tickets.

During the six weeks leading up to the Iron Bowl, The University of Alabama and the West Alabama Food Bank challenge Auburn University and the Food Bank of East Alabama to see who can collect more non-perishable food to help needy Alabama families.  Since the drive began in 1994, the two schools have combined to collect nearly 2.5 million pounds of food.

The Community Service Center will be collecting nonperishable food items, as well as monetary donations.  A $10 donation can also be made by texting "BAMA" to 27722 and replying "Yes."  Collection barrels will be placed at various locations both on and off campus. Donations will also be accepted at the Community Service Center, located at 346 Ferguson Center, and online at http://beatauburnbeathunger.ua.edu.
