2009 Tax Cycle Has Begun! |
|
Quick Message |
| The 2008 tax year is complete and to say the least, "it has been a challenging year for everyone". We have witnessed economic times that most of us have never witnessed before, with an increase in the number of foreclosure recordings in Lake County, unemployment being over 10%, hundreds of homeowners had to come up with creative ways to meet this tax obligation.
Adding the capability to make partial payments by homeowners for these property taxes created extra phone calls, more paper work and additional foot traffic through this office, but most importantly it did provide homeowners with a peace of mind that these taxes would eventually get paid.
I would like to take this opportunity to publicly thank the employees of this office, as well as United Way of Lake County and their agencies, for their help in dealing with many homeowner's problems and requests during these tough economic times. |

Important Taxpayer Information |
Senior Citizens Tax Deferral Application Deadline is set for February 26, 2010
Even though we had great difficulties in receiving the funds from the State of Illinois for the 2008 tax payments, we have been guaranteed that this program will continue.
The Senior Citizens Tax Deferral program is a State of Illinois program that is managed by the County Treasurer's Office. It is a state loan that actually pays your county property tax at a 6% simple interest rate.
A lien is placed on the property and repayment takes place upon death or sale of the home. The owner must be a least 65 years old as of June 1st of the tax year claimed and a household income of $50,000.00 or less. The property cannot be income producing, such as a rental. You must provide proof of current house insurance and property taxes must be current at the time of application.
Those that have a current mortgage, second mortgage or reverse mortgage, must check with their lending institution to see if they qualify.
A new application is needed each year.

| Is it hard to come up with your tax payment in June and September? |

Most of our Lake County Banks can establish saving accounts that can be used to pay Lake County Taxes. You can build up balances at your own pace, earn interest, and most important, enjoy the peace of mind that the money will be there when the taxes are due.

| Calendar of Events for the 2009 tax cycle: |
Currently all township assessment letters have been mailed out by the Chief County Assessors Office. As of December 31st at 5:00 pm, filing deadlines for all townships were officially closed. Hearings will be scheduled through-out the first part of the year.
Even though there has been a large increase in appeals, it is still our goal to get the 2009 tax bills (payable in 2010) out the first week in May with installments due June 3rd and September 3rd, 2010.
All taxing bodies will soon be setting their 2010 budgets, which will play a key role in your tax rate. |
