October 2009
End of 2009 Tax Cycle is Near! |

Important Taxpayer Information |
|
The 2008 tax year has been a challenging year for collection in Lake County, but the treasurer's office continues to process payments.
We are currently sending out post cards to some 12,000 taxpayers that have not paid their 2008 tax bill in full. The idea of this notice is to first make sure the taxpayers are aware of the balance due before added cost accrues. Secondly, we are hoping to eliminate some of these 12,000 plus parcels from our delinquent notices that will be generated October 29, 2009. By Illinois State Statutes, each county treasurer is required to send out by Certified Mail a notice to all delinquent taxpayers, which will create a lot of extra postage costs.
In addition to those parcels, we are still working with the Illinois Department of Revenue on our 300 senior deferral participants, that have not been paid by the state for the 2008 tax year. We also have another 400 homeowners that had their mortgage with Taylor, Bean and Whitaker, which filed bankruptcy, leaving these homeowners high and dry for their 2008 tax payments. We have been assured that these payments will be made and are currently working with Bank of America on these 400 payments.

| Is it hard to come up with your tax payment in June and September? |
|
Most of our Lake County Banks can establish saving accounts that can be used to pay Lake County Taxes. You can build up balances at your own pace, earn interest, and most important, enjoy the peace of mind that the money will be there when the taxes are due.
|
| Partial Payments |
|
We are continuing to take partial payments until December 4th. Plese note that after October 29th, all payments must be paid with certified funds. |
| Tax Sale - December 7th & 8th |
|
Our annual tax sale will be held on December 7th and 8th. The sale will be held at the Greenbelt Cultural Center, 1215 Green Bay Road, North Chicago and will begin at 9:00 am and continue until all taxes are sold.
It should be reminded that at the annual sale, by Illinois State Statutes the county does not sell the house, they sell the unpaid portion of the 2008 taxes. The homeowners have at least two years to redeem these taxes, plus interest and costs through the Lake County Clerk's Office. |
