Greetings!

If there is one thing we can all count on, it is change; it is a constant. For organizations like Port, there are a lot of reasons that change occurs;  programs grow and shrink, needs change and so programs must adapt,  revenue changes,  State regulations and requirements change,  and naturally over time, organizations evolve into something more than they were.

Today, Port is in the midst of a sizable infrastructure change.   In order to stabilize our residential programs in light of on-going State funding cuts,  we realized we had to do business differently.   We are currently in the process of restructuring our residential model from strictly a shift-staff model to a long term staff model.  Not only does this afford us better resource efficiency,  it also creates the possibility for even stronger, more effective programming.   The outcome of this change is definitely a win-win scenario, but not without some pain.  The process of changing can be very hard.  It takes a lot of personal strength for our staff to put their personal feelings about change aside to do what is best for the organization and those we support.  To say that I am proud of the work this team is doing to get Port Resources successfully through this transition,  would be an enormous understatement.   It is often times like this when you get the chance to see the true character of people-  and I am very inspired by the collective efforts of all of our staff;  they have stepped up to the challenge and they are doing an amazing job supporting their teams, teammates and those we support.

Every employee makes a commitment and that in turn provides Port Resources the ability to carry out its mission.  Kevin Meggison, who you will learn more about later in this newsletter, is one example of the level of commitment our staff demonstrate.   In spite of any changes we face- the team keeps its eye on the prize.   So although change can be hard,  it can also bring new and exciting opportunities,  we look forward to seeing what opportunities we will have in the coming year.

Sincerely,

"When they see you come through the door and you see that smile, you know you've made a difference.  It's easy to come back to that."

Kevin's quote is taken from a video that highlights the relationship he has fostered with Robert.Watch Kevin And Robert's Video   Port Resources is proud to have the opportunity to support Robert who first came to live in one of Port Resources residential homes a decade ago. Kevin is one of Port's staff that helps Robert live his most independent life possible and together they engage in activities that focus on Robert's interests while working on Robert's life skills.  Two of Robert's interests are photography and wildlife.  Kevin has established a friendship with a neighbor that owns horses and Robert enjoys visiting and taking photos of the horses and farm.
One of Robert's goals is to manage his own money.  Kevin works with Robert on saving money for the items he wants.  They often go to the store and Kevin stands in the background while Robert will take out his wallet and purchase an item.  Robert talks about his relationship with Kevin; "I enjoy taking pictures of wildlife in Gorham with Kevin.  We go out and take pictures of turkey's, deer and horses.  Kevin is a pretty cool person.  Each morning when Kevin arrives we start the day by cooking breakfast.  Scrambled Eggs are my favorite and Kevin let's me cook!"

Robert's parents live in the Mid-Coast Region and Robert's dad Martin talks about the updates they receive from Robert; "On average, Robert phones home three to four times a week.  Robert indicates that his daily schedule always involves some community activity.  Activities include visits to shopping areas as well as special events including camping trips, parades and fairs.  Robert is always pleased to report his daily activities.  Kevin is also involved in providing transportation for Robert's visits to our home."

Port is fortunate to support individuals like Robert and to have staff like Kevin who are dedicated to bring our mission to life every day.
