Greetings!

You will find a common theme in this issue of Opening Doors; partnerships and collaboration.  In today's tough economic times we believe it is imperative for Port Resources to establish and maintain partnerships with other organizations in our community.  These win-win scenarios not only benefit us in the short-term with new resources or services for those we support, they also go far in creating sustainable long-term relationships and new ambassadors for our organization.

Financial considerations create a compelling enough argument to look in this direction,  however the fact that there is such a mutual benefit makes this even more attractive.  Stay tuned -  you never know who our next new friends will be!!

Sincerely,

An Inspiration to Many

Brenda with Kathie
Brenda with Wal-Mart Personnel Coordinator Kathie Egan

For the past ten years, Port Resources resident Brenda P. has spent most of her afternoons in Windham, ME, greeting and assisting customers as they arrive at Wal-Mart.   Work Opportunities Unlimited provides 3 hours per week of job coaching for Brenda; however she is very independent in her job and looks forward to seeing her co-workers and customers 4 days a week.

In the fall of 2010 Brenda became a local celebrity when she successfully foiled two robberies while she was working. Brenda is a bit modest when describing the incidents, both of which were would be thieves trying to steal Flat Screen TV's. "My job is important to me" Brenda says matter of factly.  NECN also did a feature on Brenda on their newscast Video of Brenda on NECN  Wal-Mart Personnel Coordinator Kathie Egan says Brenda "is very, very good at her job and a lot of customers love to see Brenda...it makes their day!"

When she is not working at Wal Mart, Brenda lives in one of Port Resources residential homes and enjoys spending time

with her housemates, Port Resources staff and taking care of her cat. When she is at home, two of her favorite activities are taking walks and watching her favorite soap operas.  She is quick to smile and is very considerate of all around her. Brenda also maintains a very healthy lifestyle and has lost over 50lbs through exercise and healthy food choices.

Port Resources wishes to congratulate Brenda on her 10 years at Wal-Mart and thank her for being an inspiration for those

around her.

1st Annual Paths to Partnership Walk a Success!

paths to partnership-group

Hearts and Horses Therapeutic Riding Center in Buxton, ME was the site for "Paths to Partnership", a walk fundraiser to benefit both Hearts & Horses and Port Resources.  Participants raised money through pledges for either organization and came out on Sunday, September 11th for an afternoon walk, music and  pony rides.  Port Resources is proud to partner with Hearts and Horses, and special thanks to Hearts and Horses Executive Director Stephanie Keene and her staff and volunteers for hosting a great event.  We are looking forward to next year's 2nd annual Paths to Partnership and growing this fundraiser for many years to come!

UNE Occupational Therapy Program-A Community Partner

UNE students
UNE Students Amanda Perron, Laura McHarg & Tynisha LaCroix
For two years, graduate students in Professor Kate Loukas' Occupational Therapy Program have volunteered in some of Port Resources residential homes.  Port Resources and the individuals we support have benefited greatly from the knowledge and enthusiasm that each UNE Graduate Student offers.  Professor Loukas discusses the value of partnering with Port.  "As we teach in the classroom, it is important for students to see examples in the community or a clinical setting.  Students have participated in a research study and implementation of assessments for the Social Cognition Research Project that is a collaborative project between Port Resources and UNE.  Students have also been able to contribute to occupational performance through enriching the sensory rooms in some of Port Resources homes."
The work and effort each of the students has provided is greatly appreciated and embraced by Port Resources staff and consumers.
