Termespheres Take Over the Downtown Library!

12 Termespheres, by artist Dick Termes will be on display at the Downtown Library through the month of June. This exhibit is possible through a grant from the South Dakota Humanities Council.

Kick Off Day Party - Saturday, June 11

The theme this year is "One World, Many Stories". Events will take place at both libraries, on 7th Street and at the Dahl! 

 

RCPL Downtown  - 10 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.

Join us at RCPL Downtown and RCPL North for worldly crafts and snacks, live music and Clifford the Big Red Dog!

Family Adventure Scavenger Hunt

Pack up the family and scour the city in search of answers to 13 questions. Pick up a Family Adventure Booklet from either library or download one from our website. Turn in your completed booklet by August 31st to be entered into prize drawings!

Children's Summer Reading

Start reading on June 11th! Children are asked to read or be read to for 15 minutes per day. Pick up a Reading Log from either library or download one to record your progress. Turn in logs for 25, 50 & 75 day reading. Prizes are awarded each time you turn in a Reading Log. 75 Day readers will be entered into drawings for larger prizes! Special programming is planned all summer for the Summer Reading Program. Check out our Summer Reading webpage from our homepage for more information.

flood39th Anniversary of the Rapid City Flood of 1972

In commemoration of the 39th anniversary of the 1972 Flood, the Rapid City Public Library will host the following events. flood logo

 

Flood Website and Digital Archives Demo

Thursday, June 9 from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m.

RCPL Downtown (Lobby)

 

The public is invited to view the Library's digital collection of flood information and online resources, talk to staff about the Oral History Project, check out the new Google Memory Flood Map and add their own memories to the map.

 

Our Digital Flood Archives include the DeWall collection, digital transcripts and audio news broadcasts of the events of the night, video interviews of flood survivors and a set of before/after photos by Keith Johnson. (on display at RCPL Downtown)

Flood Panel Discussion 

Thursday, June 9 from Noon - 1 p.m.

RCPL Downtown (Meeting Room B)

 

A panel discussion with Ronald W. and LaVonne Masters, authors of, "Some Through the Flood: A Story of One Family's Loss, Survival and Recovery from the 1972 Rapid City Flood". Other panel members included are: Margaret Kovarik, a retired nurse who helped the DCI and managed incoming phone calls and DelRita Schouten who lost her home and everything inside it to the flood.

 

 

OBSDOne Book South Dakota

One bookSince 2003, the One Book South Dakota program through the SD Humanities Council has encouraged everyone across South Dakota to read and discuss the same novel or memoir throughout the course of a year. This year's selection is, "The Journey of Crazy Horse," by Joseph M. Marshall III. This program is made possible by the South Dakota Humanities Council.

Author and media analyst Lee Rainie will talk about how the internet is reshaping local democracies in the United States. He will also discuss the role of libraries and local governments in supporting a well-informed citizenry.

The Rapid City Public Library has served the Rapid City area since 1879 and now offers two library locations.  Both offer print and electronic resources for adults, young adults and children as well as computers and internet access and a variety of programs and events.  In early 2008, USA Today selected the Rapid City Public Library downtown as one of the nations 10 greatest places to "Find a Nook and Read a Book."
