Children ages 5-12 can dress as their favorite book character. There will be prizes, snacks and games.
Those attending will vote for best costumes.

 

HPMMay is Historic Preservation Month

"Celebrating America's Treasures" 

  

In celebration of Historic Preservation Month two events will take place at the Library.

 

June Beason from the Rapid City Society for Genealogical Research will do a Beginning Genealogy Workshop on May 21 from 1-5 p.m. at the downtown library (meeting room B). For more information contact June at treehunter@rap.midco.net.


Stephanie Bents, Rapid City Public Library Digital and Emerging Technologies librarian and Jean Kesselhoff, a local historian, will present a program on Historic Buildings in Rapid City and on the library's online digital archives May 26 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at the downtown library (meeting room B).

Celebrate Mango Day at the Library!

Mango is an online language-learning system that can help you learn languages like Spanish, French, Japanese, Brazilian Portuguese,

German, Mandarin Chinese, Greek, Italian, Russian and more. Learn actual conversational language skills when it's convenient for you!

Internet access and a library card are required.

 

For Mango Day, participants can get hands-on experience using this database and discern the benefits of learning one of thirty-four

languages, enter for door prizes (Mango T-shirts), and enjoy mango

smoothies from 3 - 4 p.m.

Author presentation and book selling and signing with Bruce Smith who has written a book called,"Wildlife on the Wind." His website is www.brucesmithwildlife.com

 

Smith is a 30 year veteran wildlife manager and scientist of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. He now writes full-time to promote wildlife conservation and resource sustainability. His book is the first published about wildlife restoration on an American Indian reservation, the Wind River reservation in Wyoming.

Community Voices: The Black Hills Yesterday
and Today

Paul Horsted will discuss his book "The Black Hills Yesterday and Today"  featuring a slide show presentation and time for questions and answers at the end of the program. Horsted is the owner of Dakota Photographic LLC and the author of "Crossing the Plains with Custer," a companion volume to his earlier book, "Exploring with Custer: the 1874 Black Hills Expedition", "The Black Hills Yesterday & Today", and "Custer State Park: From the Mountains to the Plains."

 

 

Lunch & Learn: How and Why Bees Communicate

Lee Alley is a realtor and beekeeper and he will demonstrate and explain four surprising methods of complex communication required for a colony to manage its food collection, leadership transitions and military defenses. Soundtracks and video will be a part of the presentation. Call 394-4171 or register online on the events calendar by noon on May 16 to RSVP for lunch.

The Rapid City Public Library has served the Rapid City area since 1879 and now offers two library locations.  Both offer print and electronic resources for adults, young adults and children as well as computers and internet access and a variety of programs and events.  In early 2008, USA Today selected the Rapid City Public Library downtown as one of the nations 10 great places to "Find a Nook and Read a Book."
