Over the past decade and a half, access to computers and the Internet in U.S. public libraries evolved from a rare commodity into a core service. Now, people from all walks of life rely on this service every day to look for jobs, find health care, and read the latest news. As the nation is struggling through a historic recession, nearly 1/3 of the U.S. population over the age of 14 use library Internet computers and those in poverty relied on these resources even more.
Compared to 1996 when only 28% of public libraries offered access to the internet, over 99% of public libraries now see internet access as an essential, core service. Part of this national trend is the increased use of technology to better engage with a community as well as utilizing those venues to better determine and meet patron need. According to a recent PEW study, 72% of adults are texting on a regular basis. As a result, the Rapid City Public Library offers a "Text-A-Librarian" service where patrons can text questions to the library and be answered promptly by a librarian.
Today, almost all public libraries offer public access to computers and the Internet and still stand out as one of the few places that can address the needs of all kinds of computer users, from seniors to students and young professionals. The library is a place to find, explore and develop new skills. Whether you are looking for work, furthering your education or learning about the newest way to keep in touch with family and friends; the Rapid City Library keeps you connected.
