Communities Thrive @ Your Library
April 11-17 is National Library Week, a time to celebrate the contributions libraries make to their communities year round. Libraries are the heart of every community and the Rapid City Public Library helps our community thrive.
In celebration of this year's theme, Communities Thrive @ Your Library, the Rapid City Public Library is offering several opportunities for people young and old to learn and have fun at different events.
To kick off the week, on Sunday, April 11 from 1-3 p.m. everyone is invited to General Beadle Elementary School for Cultural Day. All ages may come and learn about different cultures by tasting food, listening to music and talking with people. There will be performances throughout the event and door prizes sponsored by the Journey Museum and library will be given away.
Family Story Time on Tuesday, April 13 at the downtown library, will feature Sgt. 1st Class Kristi Palmer from the South Dakota National Guard reading stories in honor of the Month of the Military Child. Join us at 6 p.m. for stories and pizza.
On Wednesday, April 14 at 2 p.m. the library will host a webinar resume workshop featuring resume expert and author Barbara Safani. The webinar will teach attendees how to write an effective resume that gets attention and interviews. This workshop is geared towards people making career transitions, re-entering the workforce and college students.
This year's One Book South Dakota choice is "What is the What" by Dave Eggers. A book discussion led by School of Mines professor Kathy Antonen will take place at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 15 at the downtown library. The book is about Valentino Achak Deng's remarkable journey from war-torn East Africa to the United States. Valentino was one of the "Lost Boys" of Sudan.
On Friday, April 16 at 7 p.m. the library will host a Poet's Coffeehouse in conjunction with the 9th Annual High Plains Writers Poetry Competition. Click here to learn more about the event and competition.
Dr. Kevin Weiland, author of "The Dakota Diet and the Return of the Buffalo," will be in the downtown library lobby for a drop-in program from 1-3 p.m. on Saturday, April 17. He will have some healthy appetizers to share that are related to his book. |
