Keep Warm at Library Events
It may be cold outside, but in the warmth of the library we have plenty of events taking place in January to help you beat the winter blues.
Community Voices: Adult Lecture Series
Recession, job loss, housing crisis, economic recovery, health care reform...what exactly will 2010 bring for the economy and how will it impact you? Dr. John C. Quinn will address these key questions during his presentation, "The Economy in 2010-What it Means to You," at the Rapid City Public Library on Thursday, Jan. 7. The presentation starts at 6:30 p.m. at the downtown library in the Helen Hoyt Room. Refreshments are provided.
Teens, Come Cram Jam for Finals A Cram Jam will be held from 6-9:30 p.m. on Jan. 17 at the downtown library to give high schoolers a place to prepare for finals. Students in 9th grade and above are invited to study after the library closes. Laptops, snacks and a quiet place to study will be provided.
No School Discovery Days When school is out on January 18 and 25, bring the kids to the library for some family fun. On January 18 artist Dwayne Wilcox who will teach students ages 10 and older about ledger art and attendees can create their own. On January 25 Laurie Root, South Dakota Game Fish and Parks naturalist, will talk about wildlife and their habitats. She will show students different animal hides and share rubber stamps of animal prints that students can use to make their own. Both Discovery Day programs will be held from 9:30-11 a.m. downtown and 1-2:30 p.m. at General Beadle.
Lunch and Learn About Beekeeping
Bees will be the focus of the Lunch & Learn program on Jan. 20 from noon to 1 p.m. Jerry Owens, a local beekeeper, will discuss what it takes to be a beekeeper and how his concern for the future of bees inspired him to start a new organization, Wannabe a Beekeeper. If you want lunch you must pre-register by calling the library by noon on Jan. 18. Lunch is provided by the Friends of the Library.
Poets be Heard A Winter Poets' Gathering will take place on Jan. 22 at 7 p.m. Everyone is invited to read or listen to poetry. This event is sponsored by the library and the High Plains Writers Group.

Award-winning artist, Dwayne Wilcox, will teach children 10 years old and older about ledger art and help them create their own ledger art. Ledger art was created by Native American Artists in the 1860's when traditional art materials became scarce.

Wildlife with Laurie Root9:30-11 a.m. RCPL Downtown (Meeting Room B) 1-2:30 p.m. RCPL North (Commons Area) Laurie Root, a naturalist with Game, Fish and Parks, will talk about wildlife and their habitats, have different animal hides on display, and teach kids about animal prints with a hands-on activity.

The Rapid City Public Library has served the Rapid City area since 1879 and now offers two library locations. Both offer print and electronic resources for adults, young adults and children as well as computers and internet access and a variety of programs and events. In early 2008, USA Today selected the Rapid City Public Library downtown as one of the nations 10 great places to "Find a Nook and Read a Book."
