Books by Plane, Train and Automobile
Will you be spending hours in your car or on a plane this holiday season? Would you like a way to escape from the relatives for a few hours? Or are you just looking for a way to kill some time while you are off from work or school?
No matter what your plans are for the holidays, the Rapid City Public Library has a resource called OverDriveŽ that can help you pass the time. OverDriveŽ offers downloadable audiobooks through the Internet in an mp3 format compatible with iPods, Zunes and other mp3 players.
So what is a downloadable audiobook? It's like a book on CD - but even better. Just like a book on CD, it's a recording of a book being read aloud. That recording is stored online in a format that can be downloaded and played on a computer or audio player.
Downloading audio books is easy! You don't even have to come to the library. All you need is a valid library card, access to the Internet and software for your computer and/or device to which you'll download the audiobooks. The software is available free from the OverDriveŽ website. Once you have these three things, you're ready to download onto your player.
Go to the library's website and click on the "Downloadable Audiobooks" link located in the left column for more information and to see the selection of audiobook titles. Now download the audiobooks you want. Transfer them to your player and you're ready for hours of entertainment. An extra bonus, no late fees! The books simply expire on your player. |
Check In Materials Today!
Visitors to the library in the past few weeks may have noticed some changes in the lobby. The front-desk area has been rearranged and self check-in machines are now available for patrons to use. The self check-in machines allow library patrons to check-in materials they are returning. The machines provide a real-time check-in feature and easy-to-use interface so patrons are assured their materials are returned. The machines will also help the library increase circulation, maintain a more accurate catalog and provide improved customer service to patrons needing assistance. Since materials are checked-in by the patron as soon as they are returned to the library, they are processed more efficiently which means that popular materials will be back on the shelves faster than before. |
 Library Director Honored
Greta Chapman, director of the Rapid City Public Library, was honored at the Rapid City School District Board of Education meeting on Nov. 5 as a recipient of the Exemplary Leadership Outstanding Collaborative Partner Award. The award is given out annually by the school district to a person in the community that exhibits exemplary leadership. It recognizes the work done by individuals in the community in partnership and collaboration with the school district. "Greta is known for her leadership and skills in providing quality library services in our city and region," said Dr. Peter Wharton, Rapid City school district superintendent. "She has been a collaborative partner and strong supporter working with the school district, city and county to leverage resources in outreach to residents of all ages in our community. She is a creative, innovative and out of the box thinker in her efforts to provide library services to meeting the needs of our residents." |
