Native American Heritage Month at the Library
After nearly a century of advocacy, Native American Heritage Month was first recognized through a joint resolution by Congress in 1990. Each November we recognize the significant contributions the first Americans made towards the establishment and growth of the United States and pay tribute to the rich ancestry and traditions of Native Americans. This November, the Rapid City Public Library has several events planned and resources available in celebration of Native American Heritage Month.
For children, both public libraries will host family story times with the theme Native Americans and Thanksgiving. Family story times feature stories and singing topped off with a pizza party. The downtown story time is Nov. 10 at 6 p.m. and the north story time is Nov. 17 at 6 p.m. On Nov. 30, the library is the place to be for a No School Discovery Day. Ateyapi mentors Devin Whirlwind Soldier and Stephen Yellowhawk will be at the downtown library from 10 to 11:30 a.m. and the north library from 2:30 to 4 p.m. to perform Native American songs and dances and teach children hand games.
For adults, the Sunday Selections book discussion group will feature the book "Flight" by Sherman Alexie. Alexie is a Spokane/Coeur d'Alene Indian. Many of his writings are based on his own experiences as a Native American. They include poetry, short stories, novels and films. Sunday Selections takes place Nov. 15 from 2 to 4 p.m. The Lunch and Learn program on Nov. 18 from noon to 1 p.m. will feature Native American author Virginia Driving Hawk Sneve. Sneve was born and raised on the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota. She has written several fiction and nonfiction books for youth and adults. Both events take place at the downtown library.
During the month of November, the library will feature the database American Indian History Online. This database offers access to more than 15,000 years of Native American culture and history. For those who want help using this database, stop by the downtown library lobby between 3 and 4 p.m. on Nov. 18. Staff will be available to assist you and answer questions. |
