Termespheres All-Around @ the Library

Dick Termes is an internationally acclaimed artist whose work has been recognized worldwide! Unlike any other painter; he paints on spheres which, when completed, are known as Termespheres. What you are seeing when you look at a Termesphere painting is an optical illusion. An inside-out view of the total physical world around you on the outside surface of a hanging and rotating sphere. Dick Termes has been painting spherical paintings since 1968 when he received his Masters Degree in Art from the University of Wyoming. He continued his pursuit with his thesis on the Termesphere at the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles where he received his Masters in Fine Arts.
H.O.P. Termesphere Exhibit On display at the Downtown library in August Come reconsider how you think about the world around you using geometric artwork by world-renowned artist, Dick Termes of Spearfish, SD. Multiple Termespheres will guide you and your family through a hands-on exhibit exploring geometric shapes, tessellations, optical illusions, and more. This exhibit, brought to you by the Hands-On Partnership (HOP) for Science, Literature and Art in South Dakota, will take you through 16 art and geometry panels and over 6 hands-on activities to explore. Visitors and schools are invited to make a captured world, draw your own termesphere, and magnetically create 3-dimentional shapes. Don't miss this one of a kind exhibit featuring hands-on learning activities! The library has a Termesphere, "Holes to the Whole," on loan from Dick Termes through the month of August. Look for it in the study space across from the circulation desk at the Downtown library. Polyhedron Workshop Students Learn to Create Polyhedron Models This workshop is a great hands-on and minds-on workshop for students to learn spatial thinking and the connection between Art and Geometry. Students will gain an understanding of how often the Polyhedra are used in nature and by humans. The workshops take place on Wednesday, August 5 at both libraries. The workshop at the Downtown library begins at 10:00 am and the workshop at the North library begins at 1:00 pm. Participation is limited to 40 at each location and participants must be ages 3rd grade and up. Call 394-4171 to sign up for a spot! Some information in this article was acquired from Dick Termes's website, www.termespheres.com. Visit it to learn more about Termespheres and the polyhedron workshop today. |
