Rapid City Flood of 1972
floodCalling for Participants!

We Want Your Stories!

Help us record your memoirs of the 1972 Flood
The Rapid City Flood of 1972 was one of the deadliest floods in U.S. history. More than 200 people lost their lives in a period of hours on the night of June 9-10, 1972. Many people have recorded their memories of that night and the Rapid City Public Library serves as a digital archive of those memories. Do you remember the flood? If so, please share your memories and photos. Your memoir will be preserved and made available to future generations in the form of a video interview available through the internet. Call the Rapid City Public Library reference staff to set up an interview at 394-6139 ext. 7501.

Click Here to explore our existing Flood Archive that includes flood facts, flood articles, USGS flood info and photos, an interactive flood map, the original National Weather Service report and the final investigation report.

Books on the Road...or anywhere!

There's good news for those who will be on the road this summer. ipodThe Rapid City Public Library offers downloadable audiobooks in an mp3 format compatible with iPods, Zunes and other mp3 players.

There are many reasons to love audiobooks.  They are great companions for long, tedious projects or scenery-deficient road trips.  With RCPL, OverDrive® and netLibrary® you don't have to spend money on audiobooks; you don't even have to plan ahead. Just download one anytime you want from the Rapid City Public Library's website. Transfer it to your player and you're ready for hours of entertainment.

So what's a "downloadable audiobook?"  It's like a book on CD - but even better.  Just like a book on CD, it's a recording of a book being read aloud.  That recording is stored online in a format that can be downloaded and played on a computer or audio player.

The Rapid City Public Library makes downloadable audiobooks available through  providers called OverDrive® and netLibrary®
To download a book, you need:  1) a valid library card; 2) access to the Internet; and 3) software for the computer and/or device to which you'll download the audiobooks.  The software is available free of charge from the OverDrive® website. Once you have these three things, you're ready to download  onto your player!

Click Here for more information and to see our selection of audiobook titles.  Titles can be checked out for two weeks (you don't have to "return" them, they simply expire on your device).  Some offer the option to burn to a CD so you can keep them permanently if you wish.
