News and Events Calendar
It's a new year, with some new things going on at the Rapid City Public Library. First, we're remodeling at the Downtown library (610 Quincy St.). Work is in progress to create a new public seating/reading area out of space that was previously used as a library office. Beyond that, we have some new resources and research tools for you (see information below), and are planning an exciting line-up of events and programs for 2009.

 Good News for iPod Users!
Downloadable Audiobooks in mp3 format
For a couple of years now, RCPL patrons have enjoyed being able to download audiobooks through the library's OverDriveŽ service. Users simply:
1) Download and install OverDrive's free software panel to their computer; 2) Go to the library's website to check out RCPL audio books (using their RCPL account); 3) Download them to their listening device. (Some titles, in fact, can even be burned to a CD and kept permanently.)
Until now, OverDrive audio books have only been offered in a wma (Windows Media Audio) file format that couldn't be played on some of the popular mp3 players like iPod or Zune. As of December, things have changed! OverDrive is now offering titles in the mp3 format, compatible with iPod and other mp3 players. RCPL added forty mp3 titles in December, with many more to come.
Titles in the wma format are still available. (RCPL has over a thousand titles in wma format through OverDrive.) For more information, go to the library's website: www.rapidcitylibrary.org
and click on the "Downloadable Audiobooks" link on the home page. |

The Rapid City Public Library is proud to unveil two new online research databases:
AMERICAN INDIAN HISTORY Online
American Indian History Online offers fast access to more than 15,000 years of Native American culture and history through event and topic entries, biographies, images, videos, maps and charts, legends and timelines. More than 500 tribes are represented and information on them made easy to find with indexes for both "Tribes" and "Culture Areas." The database uses rare primary source documents, detailed encyclopedic entries and a full range of maps to create a distinct, interactive and multi-faceted look at America's indigenous peoples. Search by keyword or phrase, or browse by topic, tribe, culture area or time period, to find the information that you need.
BIOGRAPHY RESOURCE CENTER Online
A comprehensive biographical reference database, the Biography Resource Center covers a multitude of subject areas including science, multicultural studies, business, politics, government, history, entertainment, sports, literature and the arts. It offers more than 435,000 biographies on more than 340,000 individuals. With its recently redesigned interface, this online database is easy to use and presents a variety of search and browse options to help users find what they need, and also offers numerous lists such as current world leaders, Nobel prize winners, notable women, etc.
These two research databases join a long list of online resources available to any RCPL cardholder. Go to the library website, www.rapidcitylibrary.org, and click on Resources, and you'll find a wide array of research materials on a variety of subjects. |
