Flint Club Diaspora
March 2009
Greetings!

Flint Club is pleased that the film industry finally realizes that Michigan exists.  With up to 42% in tax incentives offered by The Michigan Film Commission, Hollywood is beating down the doors to our state.  Since many local directors, producers and entrepreneurs are planning to get the reels rolling, Flint is poised to get a piece of the action.  Flint Club supports these and other efforts to diversify our local economy and we encourage you  to learn more about how to get your foot in the door by taking advantage of our April symposium.  We have devoted this issue and the next Diaspora to this industry and its local connections.

Made In Flint Awards

Would you like an opportunity to support people who are truly making Flint a more liveable city?
You can join Flint Club Friday, April 24th for the Flint: Live it, Love it Reception featuring the annual Made in Flint Awards from 7-9pm at the Greater Flint Arts Council in downtown Flint.  Tickets are $20 at the door and include refreshments, entertainment, and celebration of the best from Flint.  Tickets will also be available online soon.
The annual Made in Flint Awards are given to people and places that represent the best Flint has to offer. Past recipients have been people or products that positively influence or have been influenced by our community such as award winning author Christopher Paul Curtis and The Crim Festival of Races.
As an added bonus, we are excited that the Flint: Live it, Love it Reception will be held the same weekend as Flint Club's "Quiet on the Set" Film Symposium and will be an opportunity to meet and network with hometown film industry talent Ben Cain, Alex Grossman and Michael Ramsdell.
Proceeds go back into the community through Flint Club's programs and activities. Help support Flint Club and recognize those who are doing their part to help return Flint to a liveable and lovable hometown.  For more information contact carol-anne@flintclub.org or 810-233-5468

                Action In Flint

Entertainment in the Theatre?

The Capitol Theatre was once a thriving spot for entertainment.  Known for its atmospheric style auditorium and Hispanic-Italian architecture, it was one of the premiere places to visit.  Many people wonder what is to become of this beautiful historic building located in the central downtown area.
The University of Michigan-Flint has shown interest in buying the Capitol Theatre.  With seating for 1900, the theatre just might be be the perfect expansion for UM-Flint's music department.
Acting Roots!

Flint natives in the film industry might answer the question, "Where did you first fall in love with film/theatre?," might accredit several places in the city of Flint.  Some familar places that may come to mind are: The Bower Theatre, Buckham Alley, McCree Theatre.  One might also mention being a part of the Flint Community Players (formerly the Theater Guild), or even a member of the International Thespian Society in Flint Central's theatre program.  One might even remember getting dressed up to see plays at the Whiting Auditorium.
Whatever reply recieved, it is apparent that the city of Flint has given many a great start in a career in acting and film.  Let's not forget the rich cultural history that was once and still is a part of Flint's history.
Many theatres are still open and holding plays for many to view and enjoy!

Are you an Aspiring Film Industry Employee?

Have you perhaps thought about a career in the film industry but didn't know where to start?  Mott Community College is partnering with TicToc Studios to offer film classes for people who have an interest in the film industry.  These classes are set to begin next month and are each taught by a producer.
Graduates of the program will earn a certificate and will be listed in the Michigan Film Production Guide - a tool used by producers making movies in Michigan.  This could be a great start for Flint's own Steven Spielberg!
