Greetings!
Flint Club is excited to launch it's Positive Views Campaign (PV) - an initiative designed to promote a more positive image of the Flint area. For it's first PV activity, Flint Club partnered with the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Flint to develop a series of public service announcements that challenge misconceptions about life in Flint. This project was implemented to give the residents of Genesee County a voice, a chance to share their perspectives on life in Flint, and an opportunity to learn video production. A short ceremony to launch the PV Campaign will be held on Thursday, August 21, 2008 at 12:15pm at The Boys and Girls Club of Greater Flint located at 3701 N Averill Ave (formerly Sobey Elementary).

"Flint Club is thrilled to give people all across the county an opportunity to express their own perceptions of their community with the world. The PSA's will bring much needed balance to the negative images and stereotypes that are often portrayed...and who better to start with than our young people?" said Flint Club Executive Director Rhoda Matthews. The PSAs will soon air on local channels and will be available on the Internet at flintclub.org and on Youtube.com.
We would like to send special thanks to the following people for their help in making this project a success.
Boys & Girls Club of Greater Flint
Jamie Gaskin- Executive Director Gary Jones- Program Director

Mr. Foy- General Manager

| Around the World Festival in Riverbank Park
On Friday August 8th, 2008 Flint Club hosted its fourth successful festival in Flint's beautiful Riverbank Park. There was plenty of sunshine, free food and live music. Festival goers sampled cuisine from around the world and danced to the beat of local drummers. Even the kids got into the action as they learned a few moves from the belly dancer.
"The Flint Club Riverbank Park Festival Series is such a wonderful way to bring the community together in addition utilizing one of our best attributes of downtown- Riverbank Park." said festival volunteer Leanne Barkus. " Living just north of the river, I can actually hear the music in the park from my front porch and certainly wish there were concerts or events every weekend in Riverbank. It would we another great way to soak up the short Michigan warm weather."
The Riverbank Park Festival Series is in its second year thanks to the generous support of the Ruth Mott Foundation and the efforts of many dedicated volunteers. Next month's festival on Saturday, September 12th will have an X-Treme Sports theme and should be a great time for all of the returning college students in the area. The final festival of 2008 on October 11th will celebrate the Fall harvest. We hope to see you there.
If you have attended any of the Flint Club hosted festivals in Riverbank Park this year, please post your comments on www.Geneseefun.com.

Flint on the Web
Being "from Flint" is an important part of many people's identities and, whether they still live here or have moved a world away from the red bricks of Saginaw St., they feel connected to Flint people and Flint places. This feeling of belonging and pride in our city is what inspired the creation of Flint Club, but we are not alone.
The Internet has allowed Flintstones to connect in new ways and new places. Visitors to social networking sites like Facebook and Myspace can easily find groups where they can connect and share their Flint memories and discuss the future of the city.Flint Club recently launched its own social network for our members to connect with one another and build an online community to compliment our work to promote civic engagement and Flint pride.
And now Flint natives living in strange lands without Halo Burgers and Coney dogs have their own blog--The Flint Expatriate blog ( www.flintexpats.com). This blog is the creation of Powers Grad Gordon Young. Young is a freelance journalist based in San Francisco and his blog is filled with Flint nostalgia, the latest news, and an extensive Flint links section that includes a link to Flint Club's site. You can read more about Flintexpats.com and its founder here.
Do you know of any other ways that Flint natives are connecting online? If so, please let us know. Send us an email at info@flintclub.org.

Flint Club is proud to have facilitated another Flint visit for students from Harbor Lights Christian School in Petosky, MI. On Friday, August 9th the students partnered with the Foss Ave./Summit St. Block Club for a day of neighbohood cleanup and beautification work. Tools and supplies for the cleanup were provided by the Genesee County Land Bank.
This is the student's second trip to Flint this year to lend a hand with community projects around the city. Previous trips have included volunteer time beautifying Flint parks and serving food at local shelters. Thanks to all the students and staff from Harbor Lights who have given their time and energy to improving the quality of life in our beloved city.

The program will begin in Septemberof 2008. All potential mentors must have a background check completed. Our background checks will be conducted by the McDowell Agency. The Agency is under contract with us and specializes in criminal background checks, employee screening and security clearances.

Member Profile By Carol-Anne Blower
From the day I was born I have been thankful for the talents and resources of the city of Flint. I was born at Hurley Hospital weighing just over 3 pounds and extremely premature. If I wasn't born in Hurley's with its leading Pediatric ICU, I would not be alive today. After leaving the care of Hurley, I lived in my parents home in Flint. This is the home that they have had 35 of their 45 years of marriage and still live in today. I have two older siblings, my brother Michael is 13 years older than myself and my sister Anne-Dee is 8 years older, so essentially I was raised an only child. I attended Potter Elementary, Whittier, and then the Humanities Program at Central. I was lucky to have had an amazing experience in the Flint Community Schools and had extraordinary teachers. If I had to pick one thing that influenced me the most from my years in the Flint Schools, I would have to pick my participation with the Model United Nations Program. Model UN created countless memories, very useful professional skills, and most importantly a love for politics and current affairs. After graduation, I attended Michigan State University where I studied Political Science. I went to MSU during the "Flintstone" era. Being from Flint was like being a celebrity, everyone wanted to hear "real" stories from the streets of Flint town. Today people still want to talk to a person that is really from Flint. Because of all the movies and "bad places to live" lists, I think people from other places are simply curious about our city. I love to talk about the issues of the city to anyone and I am proud that people care enough to ask. Although proud to be a Flintstone, I was not happy about returning to live in the city of Flint in 2002. I needed to move back to be closer to my family after being diagnosed with a serious health condition. It took a couple of years, endless medical tests and doctor's visits to realize I have some unfinished work that I need to do for the city before I move on. Currently I am the Director of Membership and Special Events for Flint Club. Everyday I get to go to work with people who truly care about Flint and work tirelessly to improve conditions in our area. I love hearing stories from our members about growing up in the city or how they have taken their Flint talents and shared them with others all over the world. It has truly reminded me of what I love about the city not just what others say about it. It is unique view from inside the walls Flint Club. We sit within the Capital Theater Building; looking out our windows everyday, we see the remains of the old downtown, but more importantly we se the hard work being done to build a new Flint. If I could take anyplace in Flint with me anywhere I went, I would take Holly Ave., My sister and her family live on Holly right across the street from my parents. They all live within 50 feet of each other and I couldn't image being anywhere in the world without them. Yes, I did say my sister bought the house across from our parents! As crazy as that sounds, it is wonderful, I see my parents, my sister and my 2 year old niece, Lillee, everyday. And every house around us live the same neighbors that were there and watched us grow up. A little bit of small town in the "big" city.
