Welcome,
We are thrilled to introduce our new NACD newsletter. We hope it will provide a convenient way for you to keep up with NACD news and developments. The newsletter will replace our family message board.
The newsletter will include some of the more popular aspects of the message board. We will have an ASK BOB and an ASK DR. NEIL column. If you have any questions for these columns, please submit them to newsletter@nacd.org.
We will also highlight our clients' success stories in a Parents' Brag section. We want to hear your stories, so please submit your ideas to newsletter@nacd.org . Our new staff writer Beverly will contact you.
Feel free to forward the newsletter to family and friends who want to know about us.

The NACD Perspective: Why We Do What We Do
As we begin a new forum for NACD, a regular email newsletter, it is appropriate to reiterate who we are and why we do what we do. NACD was established in 1979. We're an international organization with 14 chapters and units around the United States and 3 international chapters. We work with a full range of individuals -- from those in a coma to those who are gifted and talented and anything in between. Our goal is to help every person reach his or her unlimited potential. NACD is uniquely qualified to help individuals succeed and parents are an integral part of the process. Click to read more. |
Parents' Brag: No More Signs of Aspergers by Lou Stinnett
I have to share a recent event that thrilled me, but first, you need to understand the background. When my son Bradley started his NACD program at age eleven, he was two to three years behind academically, and he had diagnoses of Aspergers, a form of autism, and Tourette's Syndrome. Over the next two years on program, he made amazing progress, catching up academically and improving socially and emotionally. He is now doing really well. He still has some problems staying focused on his work, though, and his evaluator had suggested that we might want to test him on Play Attention to see if it would be appropriate for him.
I had checked into buying it, but the expense steered me away. Anyway, I recently learned of a private organization that offered Play Attention sessions. I had heard that they offered some scholarships for the program due to research that was being conducted, so I thought I might see if we could qualify for some of the "free research"! I had been told that since there was no research on kids with Aspergers using the program, the director of the organization would be interested in seeing if it offered the same benefits.
But the end result was that we didn't qualify for the scholarship due to the fact that Bradley showed no signs of ADD on their computer test for attention. In addition, the Doctor spent about 90 minutes with Bradley and said he had no signs of Aspergers or ADD. He said that, considering Bradley's history, some great work must have been done on this young man. I already knew that he really didn't fall into any diagnosis categories any more, but it was the first time I had heard someone actually say he had no signs of the previous diagnosis, or any diagnosis currently. The doctor said that Bradley's Tourette's could be in remission, but at the present time he saw no evidence of the Tourette's either.
For once, it was a good thing not to qualify for something!
Thank you, NACD, for all that you have done to help me and my son.

| A Special Thank You from Bob
This past Christmas I was overwhelmed when I received an entire book of notes and pictures from my NACD families. You all have no idea how privileged and honored I feel to be able to participate in your lives and those of your children. The book has become my most treasured possession. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart.
