Celebration of Life

I attended the funeral of Mrs. Leah Gibbs last week. To be honest with you, I had never attended a funeral in a synagogue before. I didn't know what to expect. I had been to several services at a synagogue in my college seminary days, but again, never attended or been part of a funeral service.

The worship space was beautiful. Sacred art and sacred vessels provided visuals and shared the glorious story of the Hebrew people. I felt I was part of the place: after all, our Christian faith began with this people, with "God's chosen people."   The Rabbi was calming and soothing; her voice was reassuring and comforting. Her cantoring voice lifted my spirit.   Family members of Leah, including our Ginny Gibbs spoke beautifully of this remarkable woman. Each shared their feelings, thoughts and stories of how Leah touched their lives and left a mark upon their hearts that will not soon be removed.   The congregation prayed the Psalm 23 together: oh, so reassuring and so beautiful in word and thought.

Listening to the outpouring of emotion, I was taken back to a different time... my Mom and I were sitting together, talking, laughing and drinking a cup of steaming hot tea. We had shared many such moments as these; it was a most common occurrence.   Invariably, she would regale me with stories of her youth in Malta and how life was so challenging when she first came to North America after World War II had ended, settling in Toronto and worked as a seamstress at the Eaton Department Store.   I closed my eyes; I clearly heard the stories being told of Leah Gibbs. Yet, in my mind and heart, I was also hearing stories being told about my Mom. My heart, too, has been left with many a blessed marking that she and my Dad provided...I pray never leave me.

I miss them both. Certainly, it would be safe for me to say we all miss our dearly departed loved ones. The cruel fate of our human existence does not leave any of us unscathed from death's reality that, in time, knocks upon our door.

However, in the meantime, between this very moment and when God summons us home, we have much to do. The business of building the Kingdom of God is not for the faint of heart nor does it give us much 'down time,' either. Fortunately and blessedly so, God graces us with His love, strength and support. Equally so, we have one another, this community of St. Nicholas that as a family of faith, commit to this divine endeavor, put shoulder to the wheel and get ourselves busy with the work Jesus first commissioned His disciples some 2000 years ago: "Go, bring the Good News to all peoples."

Leah Gibbs, my Mom and Dad and so many of our dear loved ones did just that: in their own way, in their own manner and with their own intimate relationship with the Divine Creator. Let us celebrate the many gifts afforded us, savor this glorious time we have as family and friends and rejoice in the goodness that is all around us. My dear sisters and brothers, there truly is much beauty in our world. Leah saw it. My Mom and Dad saw it. I pray and hope we all see it, bask in it and then, share it with those who need it most.

Volunteers Needed for Manny's Installation
Welcome!

On behalf of ALL of us, I'd like to extend our warm and sincere thanks in advance to the Setchell family for volunteering to staff our welcome table and greet guests arriving for the installation next Wednesday, June 13 at 7PM! It is clear that on that evening we will have a full house for the celebration, making the occasion all the more memorable! But, with a capacity group, we desperately need a few volunteers who would be willing to serve as ushers before the service begins, to assist our guests in finding a place to sit, and accommodating families and others who come with guests.

The requirements aren't terribly demanding - arrive early and remain near the doors to the Sanctuary to assist late arrivals until the first reading.

We would also like to find one or two volunteers to monitor the parking lot before the service begins-protecting a few nearby spaces for any guests who are disabled, and directing overflow parking next door to the adjacent lot at Clearmont School.

Your help will contribute greatly to this memorable celebration! Please contact Bob DeHaven if you are available to assist.

Mark Your Calendar - Parish Picnic July 14
On July 14, Saturday, we will have our Parish Family Picnic.  Festivities begin around noon and will conclude with an outdoor Liturgy, (weather permitting) at 4:30pm.  Games, food and lots of fun...bring the whole gang along.  St. Nicholas will provide the hot dogs and burgers.  We ask the community to bring along the 'side dishes.'  Sign up at church and plan for a fun-filled day in the sun with our sisters and brothers of St. Nicholas.
