Almost Home...Fr. Manny

Remember that 1966 movie, "The Russians are Coming, the Russians are Coming?" It was a cold war spoof about a grounded Russian submarine off the U.S. east coast; a classic, 'tongue-in-cheek, mad-cap comedy and a funny film at that. I'm here to say the Russians are not coming, at least not that I'm aware of.

What I do know and joyfully so, is that our dear friends from St. Bede's are indeed coming. We have much to celebrate and reasons aplenty to rejoice. We are soon to be blessed with the warm and loving company of our sisters and brothers who continue on their individual and collective journey of faith by venturing forward with us at St. Nicholas. Certainly, a bittersweet event: for while here at St. Nicholas we open our doors wide and welcomingly, there is also grief and sadness amongst the good people of St. Bede's as they bid farewell to their beloved house of worship. It is never easy to leave a sacred place for another. Yet, in faith and confidence we are all destined throughout life, to leave one thing and move on to another. Heavy hearts, filled with over 5 decades of memories will be comforted, I pray, with the healing and loving companionship of the community of St. Nicholas. What we will need and make good use of is time...and in that time, we will dialogue, pray, share ideas and views on how we can all make the community of St. Nicholas a greater, more alive place of worship, ministry and community outreach.

As for the future, well, none of us can really predict what is to come. I have no crystal ball hidden away that provides me some private insight into what is to be. There is no 'hot line' connecting the bishop's office with all the clergy in the diocese that in cryptic code gives us a glimpse at what is to be. What we do have and what we all share is a promise that Jesus made: "And remember, I will be with you until the end of the ages." (Matthew 28: 20) With these words and the weight and gravity of such a statement, we are assured that our Savior and divine friend will always be with us. This gives me pause to breathe a bit easier and to know that in the tightest of times and when things are good and prosperous, Jesus will be right here, ever so close, alive and well and in our midst. Jesus will carry us when we are low and fraught with fear. Jesus will be thanked, repeatedly, and with humility when times are bright. Without a doubt, Jesus' name will be uplifted at all times; good, bad, stable or in flux.

I have no doubt that there will be some adjustments we all will need to make. Transitions are never easy. Yet, then again, we've been through this not too terribly long ago and we weathered that quite well.   I am confident and certainly anxious to welcome home our new members. How exciting it will be to have our sisters and brothers worship at St. Nicholas, share in the ministries and community activities...as if they have been part of this place for years and years. It will not be 'them and us,' No: it will be the Community of St. Nicholas and together, as a worshipping family, we will venture ever onward and forward, united in faith, in a common good and as a people deeply in love with our Redeemer and with one another. The Community of St. Nicholas is coming on...that's for sure! Welcome aboard and let's journey together.
