Moving Forward as We Build Our Church
Manny

Lent, when viewed as a journey, for truly it is, is now on the downhill side of the journey. Half way through and Easter is even closer. We still have time to be engaged with Christ in a much more special and intimate manner. And blessedly, this engagement with Christ doesn't end with the conclusion of Lent. This loving and trusting relationship, this engagement with the Redeemer is for a life time...it has no end and will continue on even when we are called 'home,' to our Lord. Our engagement with Christ is a life time commitment, in this world and the world that is yet to come.

As we continue to build our relationship with the Creator and Jesus our Redeemer, we must also commit ourselves to strengthening our commitment and relationship with our parish church. There is much to do and there are many opportunities in which to engage ourselves. In the coming months, there will be plenty of activities that will require many hands and a collective effort by the entire community of St. Nicholas. Stay tuned and keep posted to "News from Nick" and the bulletin boards around the church that will post what is on the horizon. Family fun, health matters and fund raising activities are all on the agenda and all these events will need us all.

St. Nicholas Community is a remarkable place. Our church is wonderful; unique in style and construction, architecturally vintage and sacred all at once.   Holy Innocents Hall is still quite new and still retains that 'fresh smell' scent. Breathe it in while it lasts. Like a new car, such scents fade quickly after much use and the normal wear and tear. I'd rather see our hall used and utilized more often. After all, the more people who come and share our space the better it is for them and for us. Wear and tear is good, that is when it comes to church usage. There are few things sadder than an empty and under-utilized church and church hall.

Church is a place, this is true. However, church is an experience, an encounter with the Creator and God's Divine nature.   Perhaps most important, church is made up of us, the people. We are the living stones and bricks and mortar that form and create this place we call the community of St. Nicholas.   St. Bede's Chapel to our Lady is a new addition; a tribute and in honor of our sisters and brothers of St. Bede's, who will soon make St. Nicholas their community and home.   Consider a visit to this little chapel right there in the gathering space. Absorb the quiet, the solitude and the special peace Mary, the Mother of Jesus provides. This special space has been there for a while, only now, it has a name that is fitting and beholding of its importance and value to us all.

Lent is speeding us toward Easter and there is no slowing us down. Yet, we have a ways to go in this Lenten time. We have in this sacred, church season, the rare opportunity to look deep within ourselves. In this time, let us ask ourselves how we, individually and collectively, can make St. Nicholas stronger, more alive. How can I...how can we...make St. Nicholas better, brighter and bolder? Lent is a good time for us to ponder these matters. Then again, any time is a good time for us to reflect and put thought into action when it comes to making St. Nicholas the absolute best it can and should and will be.

Our Lenten Journey

newWe have begun our spiritual journey through the six weeks of the Lenten season: an exercise into deeper prayer, meditation and reflection.  We welcome Jesus into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday April 1st; continue with Holy Week starting Monday, April 2nd and the holiest and highest of all Church feasts of the Triduum beginning with Maundy Thursday, April 5th, Good Friday on April 6th and of course, Holy Saturday and the glorious Easter Vigil on April 6th.  The Liturgy times for all services are as follows:

Palm Sunday, April 1st, 10am.  (There is no 4:30 Saturday afternoon Liturgy on March 31st)
Maundy Thursday, April 5th, 7 pm
Good Friday, April 6th, 7 pm
Holy Saturday...the Blessing of Easter Foods, from 12noon till 3 pm in the church
Holy Saturday and the great Easter Vigil, 8 pm
Easter Sunday, 10 am (Easter egg hunt following worship service
with the Easter Bunny!)

Please, come, journey and celebrate these most holy of days and enjoy the grace and spirit this beautiful Church season offers.
Meditation Prayer on Sundays - Please Join Us!

rSundays in Lent, after the 10am Liturgy, Mediation Prayer will be offered.  Christian mediation has many forms and paths.  We will take time to silence ourselves, focus and take a quiet journey, all the while drawing closer to God in the inner-solitude of our being.  We will meet in the church near the baptistry area and Manny will lead.  All are welcomed and encouraged to be part of this Lenten Meditation Prayer experience.
Bishop's Committee News

The Bishop's Committee met Sunday, March 11 and selected a committee to plan for Fr. Manny's installation on June 13, consisting of Steve Raftery, Val Gruenwald, Bill Barlow, Donna Tamaski, Hal Stratton and Pat Kalicki.  If you are interested in joining this committee, please contact Pat or Steve.

If your flower donation is being given in memory of someone or in thanksgiving, attach a note with your donation. A memorial/thanksgiving card will be printed and inserted into the flowers placed around the altar.

Memorial Book

Easter Bunny is asking for help...

The Easter Bunny has sent me a special note:  he is asking the good people of St. Nicholas to help him purchase small wrapped chocolates, jelly beans and other such small treats to be placed in the eggs that will be used in our Annual Easter Egg Hunt after the 10am Easter Sunday Liturgy.  Please, while you're out doing your shopping and Easter purchases, consider picking up a couple bags of treats.  Drop them off at Easter Egg Hunt Central...otherwise called the Sacristy inside the church!  Thanks, in advance, to one and all.  Peter Cottontail also sends his warmest regards and sincere thanks, too.
