Growing Older and Wiser...Reflection from Manny:

Today, the calendar that is my life has been turned forward another year.   As I place this article into News from Nick--cutting and pasting and getting it 'just right'--I have time to reflect and think about all the events that have filled my 52 full years lived thus far.  Amazing highs and some numbing lows...just like every one else.   None of us are exempt to the adventures and mishaps, the ecstasy and the misery that human life provides.  We learn to appreciate all that is good, especially when we suffer a setback.  When we are in despair, we look forward to better times.  So, I turn 53.  How is one supposed to feel at 53?  I'm not sure I feel any different today than I did yesterday or the day before that.  I may be a bit slower.  Not too sure I can play full-court basketball anymore and tackle football is certainly out of the question.  These physical changes come to all of us and I'm not concerned, though, I miss the full-court basketball games I played what now seems a life time ago.  Yet, I still have energy to burn...so go figure!

Change: a break from the norm; an altering of a set schedule; an inevitable fact of life every one of us must and will encounter.  Some changes are good and healthy.  Some changes are unwelcome, some are painful while some changes are warranted, needed and come naturally.  Whether change is good or bad, growth does come out of all changes and that is as it should be.  Without change, we remain static.  With change, there is a dynamism that fosters and ushers in a new air, a new spirit that encourages a fresh, creative energy to take root and grow.

As our community ventures forward and the process of calling forth our next vicar continues, let's all venture forward, together, shall we?  Let us cast our collective lot for a strong and 'spiritually alive' community of St. Nicholas.  Let us call upon the guidance of the Holy Spirit, the leadership of both the Bishop's and Search Committees and perhaps most importantly, listening to the full voice of the people to guide, inspire and strengthen us.  It is God's will that we all commit ourselves to the needs of our beloved parish, this community of St. Nicholas, to the Church in this Diocese and to all God's people throughout the world.

And lastly, on a more personal note:  THANK YOU, one and all, for the many lovely and touching birthday wishes and greetings.  You've all made the process of growing older--and hopefully wiser--that much easier and more pleasant.  God bless each and every one of us.

Bishop's Committee News

At our meeting held the morning of Sunday, September 11, the Bishop's Committee discussed plans for the semi-annual meeting to be held Sunday, October 2; an energy audit that was performed Friday, September 9, by Delta; the upcoming Stewardship Drive to be held October 2 through November 6; and items for our sign-up sheets listing volunteer opportunities.

A thank you to the Diocesan Bishop's and Trustees committee.  They have commissioned All Ways Paving to re-pave certain portions of our parking lot on Wednesday and Thursday, September 13 and 14.

Little Bulgarian School

Congratulations to the Little Bulgarian School.  Their number of students has increased from 35 - when they started their school at St. Nicholas - to 200!  Unfortunately, St. Nicholas does not have the space to house that many students.  Therefore, the Little Bulgarian School will be moving to one of the local schools to hold their classes.  We are sorry to see them go, but we wish them much continued success.  They will continue to hold their dance classes on Sundays at St. Nicholas and will on occasion rent space from us for meetings or parties.

Semi-Annual All-Parish Meeting October 2
Plan to join us for a town-hall style meeting after the 10AM Liturgy on Sunday, October 2, for the entire community, to discuss finances and the current state of our community of St. Nicholas  Bring a dish to pass around and your thoughts and ideas, too.  All are welcome!

St. Nick's Shout-Outs

Thank you!

Our thanks:

To those who constructed our garage and our stout, young men who, last Sunday, helped move things out of the vicarage and into the new garage.

To those who paved our new parking lot...so much smoother and visually appealing, too.

To Bishop and Trustees of the Diocese of Chicago, who made the above-mentioned projects possible.  We are deeply grateful.

To our dedicated community of faith who pray, from their hearts, for all the many intentions mentioned at Liturgy and in the News From Nick.

To all who have contributed to the Holy Innocents Food Pantry--those in the Community of St. Nicholas, and most recently our brothers and sisters at St. Simon's, Arlington Heights.

Scripture
Upcoming Scripture Readings

September 18, 2011 - The Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost

The Episcopal Church uses the Revised Common Lectionary.  When a choice is given for the Old Testament lesson and Psalm, at St. Nicholas we use the first option, or Track 1.  More about the Revised Common Lectionary is at this link.
