St. Nicholas . . . It's Our Home

Do you remember several weeks ago when Fr. Paul preached about the mustard seed?  He brought a couple jars of mustard seeds and shared them with us, too.  From the smallest of seeds, the mustard tree grows large and full, room for many birds to nest and with plenty of seeds for harvesting.

The community of St. Nicholas is similar to the mustard seed.  We are, in some ways, a 'smaller size parish,' that is compared to other parishes in this diocese that are significantly larger.  Conversely, we are considered large in the eyes of other parishes in this same diocese.  Yet, out of this, our small-size parish comes a myriad of ministry opportunities.  There are plenty of things that need to be done.  These activities are waiting for us to sign up, get involved and do what needs to be done!

So, to that end, there is now posted in the hallway near the restrooms a "sign-up board" that offers all the volunteer opportunities here at St. Nicholas.  Some ministry opportunities already have volunteers, but could still use additional assistance.  There are some ministry opportunities that currently have no one signed up.  These ministry opportunities sit alone; waiting patiently for some one to sign up and get things rolling.  And there are new ministry opportunities that, if we plant and nurture the seed, may well grow and thrive here at our St. Nicholas.

My dear friends, I am fully aware that all of us are busy people.  So much is expected of us--from work, family, friends, and yes the Church, too.  However, Church is more--much, much more than a place we visit on the weekend and during the holidays.  A church building is brick, mortar, glass and steel.  The real "Church" is made up of us, the living members who gather to worship.  The "Church" is built upon the memory of those who have passed on.  And the "Church" is also found in our children, who are the future.   The "Church" is US.  Yes, we are the Church and if we desire the "Church" (US) to continue to live, move and thrive in even greater ways, we must be part of the Church with a greater, physical presence and with louder voices that are raised in worship and ministry, in conversation and song and inlaughter and in our tears.

We all have a role to play.  The role is to be a true leader in our Community of St. Nicholas.  The role is to be shared, by all, for all and for the greater good.  Let's pick up the script, get into character and be superb in our roles as leaders in our community of faith.  And our tree will indeed grow strong and large, where others are welcomed to come, 'nest,' grow and thrive...all with God's grace and blessings.

Bishop's Committee News

The Bishop's Committee and Search Team met with Susan Czolgosz, Diocesan Associate for Transitions and Facilities, the evening of Tuesday, September 6, to discuss the next steps in the transition process.  The Search Team has already started the next step - putting together a Parish Profile.  So we are well on our way in the process.  This has been a lot of work for the Search Team and I applaud them for their dedication.

Semi-Annual All-Parish Meeting October 2
Plan to join us for a town-hall style meeting after the 10AM Liturgy on Sunday, October 2, for the entire community, to discuss finances and the current state of our community of St. Nicholas  Bring a dish to pass around and your thoughts and ideas, too.  All are welcome!

St. Nick's Shout-Outs

Thank you!

Thanks to:

To our Armed Forces, the police, fire fighters and all who keep us and our country safe and secure.

To all people of faith:  who embrace diversity,  unconditionally love and forgive those who have sinned against us.

To Muslims, Jews and Christians, all children of Abraham: who practice the mandates of the One True God and love their neighbors, live in peace and forgo violence.

Scripture
Upcoming Scripture Readings

September 11, 2011 - The Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost

The Episcopal Church uses the Revised Common Lectionary.  When a choice is given for the Old Testament lesson and Psalm, at St. Nicholas we use the first option, or Track 1.  More about the Revised Common Lectionary is at this link.
