Reflection from Paul
How does your garden grow? Thanks to the work of Bill Barlow and our other volunteer gardeners, the vegetable garden is yielding its produce. It's wonderful that our food pantry visitors are able to enjoy the healthy nourishment of fresh vegetables this time of year. My father always had a garden as far back as I can remember. When the tomatoes were ripe, my older brother and I would head for the garden with salt shaker in hand. We would pick the ripest looking tomato and eat it like an apple, throwing on a dash of salt. The summer before my father died, at age 88, he still grew tomato plants 6 feet high with beefsteaks the size of grapefruits. He had mastered the art of helping those tomatoes reach their full capacity. I learned from him the satisfaction of planting a seed and watching and helping it grow. These days I'm cultivating only four tomato plants by the side of the house, but I still enjoy watching them grow (and eating the tomatoes). According to Phyllis Theroux, "There can be no other occupation like gardening in which, if you were to creep up behind someone at their work, you would find them smiling." I believe that God calls us all to be earth-keepers or gardeners. When we are gardening, that's the time we can feel most in harmony with God. Perhaps it harkens back to the story of the first Garden. Gardeners are people who grow things. Whatever we do, we garden. When we sit at the computer composing a word processing document, we are gardening with words and phrases. When we sit at the piano, we are gardening with notes and silences. When we prepare a meal for our loved ones, we are gardening - creating something from God's creation. In our ministries at St. Nicholas we are gardening, because we are helping with the growth of our community and those we serve. We are also working with God to contribute to our own personal growth. You could even say that we are God's co-creators. Now that we are entering harvest time, I hope you will have the opportunity to grow and cultivate a garden. But if you don't get the chance to actually put your hands into the dirt, I hope you have had the chance to enjoy those other types of gardening - contributing to God's creation. Bishop's Committee News
Construction of our new garage is underway! The concrete has been poured for the floor and erection of the actual building will begin next week. With the vicarage for sale, we need to empty the garage at the vicarage and move it to our site. Granted, with the upcoming rummage sale, we hope most of the merchandise in the garage will be sold! And most of what isn't sold, we will donate to worthy causes, as we have in the past. But we still need somewhere to store the riding mower, lawn equipment, and various other items we use that we have no space for in the church. Plus, there's always next year's rummage sale to plan for.
