Reflection from Manny --------------------------------------------------------------
St. Nick's Knacks...It's All for Sale
It's going to be a very busy stretch these next few weeks. St. Nicholas Rummage Sale is much like Christmas: weeks and weeks of planning, saving and storing. At last, the big event comes, lots of noise and activity, people coming and going and of course, food to be had, too. And before we know it, the holiday is gone, it has passed and all that's left is the cleaning up and the early thoughts of next year's celebration.
However, we all need to focus on the next two weeks and the work that must be accomplished. There are tables to set up, items to clean, display and price. There are clothes to fold and hang on racks. There are cookies to bake, hot dogs to prepare and coffee to brew. Yes, there's much to do but certainly a task well within our range of do-ability! There's work enough for all of us and plenty of room for us to stretch our arms as we get Holy Innocents Hall and the Gathering Space to looking like a real, honest to goodness market place.
I'd like to think that our gain, financially speaking, will bring us out of the "red" and comfortably into the "black." It would take a rummage sale to end all rummage sales and this is perhaps more than what we can expect. And this is okay. We work very hard at keeping our finances under control and transparent for all to see. Yet, my friends, while the financial gains from the rummage sale are certainly important and vital, the more important gains are the building of the community; the time spent with one another; and becoming better and closer friends, as we labor to build a stronger St. Nicholas.
I invite every one to take time and sign up, pitch in, roll up our collective sleeves and have ourselves some fun in the process. Isn't the future success of our community worth all the planning, all the hard work? This truly is a labor of love. I'm convinced it is. Some parishes frown on such fundraising and I understand and appreciate their thinking. Personally, it's worth the work, just to see us all together, hands kept busy and smiles across our tired, yet satisfied faces. Would we cancel Christmas because it's too much work? I think and hope not! We celebrate Christmas to rejoice at the gift of Jesus. Let's celebrate the rummage sale as a gift to one another... a labor of love for a place we love: our Community of St. Nicholas.
