Nurturing the Seeds

I had never seen mustard seeds prior to Fr. Paul passing around those two jars at our weekend Liturgies a few weeks ago.  How amazingly small these seeds truly are.  And yet, from the smallest of the seeds known comes one of the largest of bushes.  I suspect it is just as God designed.  Scripture reminds us that it is out of Bethlehem, the least of towns and of very little esteem, that our Savior; the Redeemer of the world, Jesus the Christ comes.

We count ourselves as equal, all of us here at St. Nicholas.  No one person is greater and no one stands as the least.  We are all on a level plane, standing side by side, sister and brother to one another, all kin to Jesus and all children of the One God.  The only hierarchy here is the word itself and perhaps that is as it should be.

Consequently, we are all leaders of this community.  We bring our talents, our gifts as well as our short-comings and we share, equally, in the highs and lows of life.  The sun shines as brightly on one as the other and the rain wets us without discrimination.  Wet is wet, as hot is hot, while cold is cold...we all share, in equal portion, no one person getting more or less.  We grieve for those in pain and we experience anguish when others struggle and stumble.  We rejoice when others achieve success and we are all smiles when others find happiness and peace.

According to the calendar, we've begun the downward descent off the mountain we call summer.  We'll still have plenty of heat and the sun will remain bright in the sky for some time now.  The lightning bugs will continue to play at dusk, though we'll begin to see the gathering creatures start their foraging for food to last them during the limitations of autumn and the poverty of winter.  And we will all have work to do: at home, at the office and here at St. Nicholas.  Our rummage sale is almost upon us...don't worry, as there's enough work for all of us.  We've already begun our Advent Liturgy planning, making sure the music is just right and we'll begin to make sure the colors and decorations of the season are gathered for eventual display.  Programs that will bring us together will be up and running; programs for the young in age and those of us young at heart.

You see my dear friends; there is much that goes on below the surface.  Church is more, much more than only a Saturday and Sunday place.  Much goes into the running and maintaining of a community of faith.  The church building has its needs and the "flesh and blood" of the church, all of us; we too, have our needs that seek attention.

Let's make sure, shall we, to look after one another; to be engaged and involved in the life of the Church and the life of our community members.  There is music to be sung and open slots that need filling in the choir.  There are lessons to be read and God's glory to be professed.  There are stories to be shared with our children and knowledge and history to be embraced by the entire community.  Yes, our Church and this particular community of faith, our St. Nicholas, are alive and well.  Let's keep it growing and going and let's see to its care and protection, as a family and as loving friends.

Our annual rummage sale will be here soon, so please

Rummage Sale

start gathering items for the sale (please don't bring items in until after August 1).  This is always a fun and worthwhile event.  This year many of us will be baking cookies to sell and Paul Swanson will be making coffee lattes.  Yum!

Not only do we need your items, but we need you!  There are sign-up sheets in the gathering space to volunteer for set up the week of August 14 through August 18 and to help at the actual rummage sale August 19 and 20 (sale hours 9AM - 3PM).  Click here to sign-up online to volunteer to help with the sale. Come and enjoy the fun and camaraderie, plus make money for St. Nicholas!
