Did you know we can help St. Nicholas out in the following ways...

1) Register your Dominick's Fresh Values card (see Pat Kalicki), then shop at Dominick's using your card and a portion of the sale comes back to us.

2) Shop via Amazon using the Amazon.com search box on our website (stnicholasepiscopal.org) and we receive a portion of that sale.

It doesn't seem to matter how "prepared" we are for the death of a loved one; for when death does come, we are shocked, saddened and taken aback.  The reality of not having this person physically around us, for some, is just too much to comprehend; it is just too much, for some, to put our hands and hearts around.

A couple weeks ago, I spent time with Ken Audette in his hospital room at Alexian Brothers in Elk Grove Village.  True to his character, Ken told me he was aware that his appearance was disturbing.  You see, the cancerous tumors had forced their way off his head, face and arms, his legs were swelled twice their normal size.  Yes, it was disturbing. Yet, Ken made me feel at ease, almost comfortable.  It was simply Ken being Ken...warm, inviting and just a good guy.  I will miss him terribly.  I will miss the Ken I first met my second week at St. Nicholas some 6 years ago.  He introduced himself, welcomed me and just like that...there was a connection, a friendship.  I will miss the Ken who stood before the congregation one Sunday morning last year, tears streaming down his face as he shared his continuing fight against cancer.  He shared this information with us, the Community of St.Nicholas, his extended family.  I will miss the Ken I never did get to know...a physically healthy Ken...the Ken none of us did get to know and love.

In our conversation, we talked about a great, many things: faith, heaven and what God will really be like.  We laughed and yes, we cried.  Two friends, conversation and a cup of tea for the both of us.  We shared in the gift of Holy Communion, too.  This made Ken very happy.  He welcomed the presence of Christ a long time ago in his life and on this day, receiving the Sacrament of Christ brought a very, special joy and peace to him.  It was my honor to be part of this, to share faith and to share Christ in the simple form of bread.  I won't soon forget that time with Ken, as it turned out, the last time I would see Ken, until, of course the time we're all reunited with Christ.  It was truly divine time; God was present and we knew, in our hearts that Christ was taking part in our conversation, in our time together...that is why, perhaps, we were so free to talk as we did.

We now mourn his passing.  However, as Christians we rejoice in the knowledge and with what our faith assures us, that Ken is in the full presence of God and at long last, resting, peacefully and comfortably with Christ.

For those who wish to pay their respect to Ken, here is the information as provided:

July 10, 2011 - The Fourth Sunday after Pentecost

The Episcopal Church uses the Revised Common Lectionary.  When a choice is given for the Old Testament lesson and Psalm, at St. Nicholas we use the first option, or Track 1.  More about the Revised Common Lectionary is at this link.
