Reflection from Manny
We've reached the half-way point in this calendar year.  Hard to believe, for it feels, for some of us, as if we just entered the holy season of Lent as opposed to just finishing the Easter Season.  Time certainly does not stand still.  Now the summer season has dawned, complete with high heat and unpleasant humidity, the annoying buzz of mosquitoes stalking about our ears.  Gardens that need our daily attention and the moments at dusk, sitting on the porch watching the last of the day's sunshine fight off the approaching evening darkness.
So, at this half-way point of 2011, I'd like to take this time to thank and acknowledge each member of this Community of St. Nicholas; for the continued support and strengthening of our community.  We remain a strong, vibrant and growing community.  However, we can only stay on this positive road as long as we all continue to participate and share, equally, in the ministerial, spiritual and financial well being of our parish.  We truly are a wonderfully loving and dedicated family of faith.
With all that being said, I would be remiss if I did not also make mention that there is time, always time, to either make or increase a pledge to St. Nicholas.  Some programs and a full choir do take a brief and certainly well deserved respite during the hot, summer months, while many of us take extended trips and time away from church.  Yet, the work at St. Nicholas and the day to day operations of the entire facility continues.  Quite frankly, there are bills to pay, utilities that are being used, supplies that need reordering and restocking.  We can only sustain and properly operate with the continued financial assistance of the entire community.  With some luck and good timing we may even put a few bucks into the bank, only with pledge obligations being met and new pledges being made, generous gifts and good will offerings.  The church never stops running.   We are a seven day a week operation and there is always something going on.  And this, my friends, is how a church should be:  fully alive, active and fully engaged and enmeshed in the wider community.
So, again I wish to thank you all for the bounty you provide and I ask that we all continue to be generous to our parish, so we can continue to move forward and sustain our Spirit-filled efforts at growing our roots ever deeper in Christ, in the wider community and with one another.

In the Redeemer,

Bishop's Committee News

The Search Team has set up a schedule for small group discussions during the month of July.  They have worked very hard on developing information and questions for these discussions, plus they have tried to make sure that there are a variety of times and dates to meet everyone's needs.  Please make sure you take advantage of one of these meetings.  This is your chance to make sure your voice is heard.  Your input is very important in determining the future of St. Nicholas!

Fridays, July 8, 15, and 22, 7 - 9 pm
Saturdays, July 9, 16, and 23, 2 - 4 pm
Sundays, July 10, 17, and 24, 11:30 am - 1:30 pm

Calling All Green Thumbs
If you've had the desire to get your hands dirty...well...we need your help.  Consider your self invited to come and help with the
St. Nicholas Garden.  There are weeds that need pulling and veggies that will, in due time, need picking and cleaning.  If you find yourself in the neighborhood or you have some time after the Saturday or Sunday Liturgy, your assistance is warmly appreciated and welcomed.  Our food pantry and the entire community of St. Nicholas benefits from the bounty of our garden.

St. Nick's Shout-Outs

Thank you!Thanks to:

Scott Cummings who joined the Food Pantry Team and did a tremendous job...welcome aboard, Scott!

Bob Kalicki and Bill Barlow for the planting of flowers at the vicarage...the house looks so much better and welcoming.

The Bishops and Trustees for their assistance in getting the privacy fence up around the patio...these fences will make for good and better neighbors.

Upcoming Scripture Readings

June 26, 2011 - The Second Sunday after Pentecost

The Episcopal Church uses the Revised Common Lectionary.  When a choice is given for the Old Testament lesson and Psalm, at St. Nicholas we use the first option, or Track 1.  More about the Revised Common Lectionary is at this link.

News from Nick is published by St. Nicholas Episcopal Church, Elk Grove Village, Illinois each Thursday.
