Listen . . . What Do You Hear?
I have to say, I can't think of a spring season that has been as bountiful as the spring of 2011 has been.  With all the rain we've had, we are reaping the benefits of gardens that are bursting with such colors and fragrances, lawns that are greener than green...every thing is lush and full.  The birds sound happier, too...perhaps the abundant rain has provided them with more food sources?  Their singing, nonetheless, is truly music to our ears.  All we need do...is listen.
Listening...it is not a lost art, far from it.  Yet, to truly listen and to genuinely hear, has become much more of a challenge.  So much 'noise' and 'talk' that vies for our attention, it is easy to become distracted, lost and maybe just so confounded with it all, we simply stop listening, we choose not to hear.  Though, to stop listening and hearing is such a disservice to ourselves...there is so much that is worthwhile and wonderful to hear...remember those singing birds that sound so happy?
We all need to remain open to what God is asking of us.  We must remain open to God's call and to listen to what God is saying. We must stop, listen and hear what each member of the Community of St. Nicholas has to say, one member to another.
Now, spring is surrendering and giving way to summers' heat and humidity. We will still hear the birds singing their sweet songs, though with the expected heat, they may not sing as long.  Still, their music is worth our time and patience...they have something beautiful to share with us.
As the days move into weeks and weeks into months and the months into years, we will all be called, more and more, to listen--and carefully so--to what is going on around us.  The discerning ear can tune out what is noise and absorb and digest what is valuable and important.  It is my deepest hope and most sincere prayer that we all, each and every member of this community, this place we all love and cherish, listen, hear and take heed to what each of us has to say and take to heart that what we say to one another is indeed valuable and important.  We will grow only if we continue to engage in open dialogue, constructive conversation and a willingness to take what we hear and put it into action.  And, with God's help and the Spirit's guidance, like the gardens this spring that are so bountiful and full, so will St. Nicholas be bountiful and more alive then ever.

Bishop's Committee News

The dates of Friday, August 19 and Saturday, August 20, were finalized as the dates for our Rummage Sale.  If at all possible, we ask that items for the Rummage Sale not be brought to church until at least August 1, as we have nowhere to store them.  The garage at the vicarage is full and the construction of our garage will not be completed in time to use it this year for storage.

Bill Barlow has been named as our point person for the Diocesan Energy Audit.  Two years of utility bills will be required to begin the audit.

A Thank You to the Bishop's and Trustees Committee, who are making the following possible:

Construction by Cardinal Fence of the privacy fence around the patio will begin Friday, June 17.  This will enable us to be better neighbors.  Our patio is higher than the yards around us, which gives our neighbors no privacy at all when the patio is occupied.

The parking lot has been marked for repair and will begin soon.  Handicapped parking spaces will be identified and handicapped signs will be installed.

The Search Team continues to meet and they are planning to start their small group meetings Friday, July 8. You will be receiving more information pertaining to these meetings from them in the near future.

Calling All Green Thumbs
If you've had the desire to get your hands dirty...well...we need your help.  Consider your self invited to come and help with the
St. Nicholas Garden.  There are weeds that need pulling and veggies that will, in due time, need picking and cleaning.  If you find yourself in the neighborhood or you have some time after the Saturday or Sunday Liturgy, your assistance is warmly appreciated and welcomed.  Our food pantry and the entire community of St. Nicholas benefits from the bounty of our garden.

Benefit Fundraiser
Maddux Joseph, a 10 month old child is battling cancer, specifically, Hepatoblastoma, a rare canderous tumor that originates in the liver.  His family is struggling to cover the medical costs.  Concerned friends and family are helping with a fund raiser.  On Monday, June 20, 2011 from 12:15pm to 3:30pm, a car wash will be held on the grounds of Elk Grove Village High School.  If your car needs a good, spring cleaning, this would be a great time to get it all scrubbed and shiny again.
Thank you.
Happy Father's Day

To all our Dads...may the Good Lord bless and sustain you, fill you with much happiness and peace and provide you all much happiness and sound health in mind, body and spirit!

Vacation Bible School

To those in our community who are looking for a local church sponsoring a Vacation Bible School for their children, our neighboring parish, Lutheran Church of the Holy Spirit can help.  Some basic info:  June 20-24, 6:30pm-8pm, ages 3 years to 5th grade and sponsored by the Grace International Preschool located at Holy Spirit Church.  Sign up sheets are located in Holy Innocents Hall.  Any additional questions, please see Manny or call Holy Spirit Church directly at: 847-290-0123.

Thank You.

St. Nick's Shout-Outs

Thank you!Thanks to:

Eddie Z., our good friend, who purchased a brand new lawn mower that will help keep our lawns looking great!

Jim M., another dear friend who does such a great job trimming the lawns and keeping things looking so beautiful.

Hal and Steve, for their generous purchase of the two candelabras that debuted on Pentecost weekend.  Let there be light...candle light that is!

'Farmer' Bill Barlow who continues to do a fantastic job in the garden...may all our tomatoes be big and plump!

Jessica, Paul, and Donna Tamaski for recommending their locksmith friend, Frank Skepnek.  Frank repaired the lock on the back door at no charge.

Upcoming Scripture Readings

June 19, 2011 - The Sunday after Pentecost: Trinity Sunday

The Episcopal Church uses the Revised Common Lectionary.  When a choice is given for the Old Testament lesson and Psalm, at St. Nicholas we use the first option, or Track 1.  More about the Revised Common Lectionary is at this link.
