Greetings!

Welcome to News from Nick.  As the subtitle above indicates, we hope this newsletter will be a resource for the community of St. Nicholas--members and friends of St. Nicholas, as well as our extended family of the Bulgarian School and the several Twelve-Step groups--in short, all our stakeholders who call St. Nicholas 'home'.

We value each person connected to St. Nicholas and encourage you to stay informed by reading this weekly email.
We All Have Our Role in this Performance
Manny

Each day, at work, at home, wherever we are and in whatever endeavor we undertake, we're expected to do our part, to fulfill our obligation and to keep our end of the agreement.

We all have our roles.

Each of us:  either by choice, by fate or by mere happen-chance, are given our parts and expected, on cue, to do our best and perform our part.

I find it "comforting," if you will, to compare life to a play, a theatrical performance--each of us having our role.

I do this perhaps for no other reason but that I love a good performance and respect the work of each cast member.

We are all members of a cast.

We all have our lines.

Each of us is equal.

We enter the stage at different times and we leave, we come and go, at various points and from different directions on stage.  But, while we are together, while we occupy the stage, this stage we call life, this cherished stage we call St. Nicholas, we all--side by side, arm in arm, face to face--do our best, speak our lines and we live our lives.  And what is our motivation?  What is it that brings out our best?  For us...on this stage we call St. Nicholas Community...it is one another.  It is our fellow cast members...it is you and it is me...it is our youngest to our most seasoned performer.  We are all equal.  There is no real starring role reserved for one, as no one person is the featured attraction.  Our voices are heard, our play complete with beautiful music that blends so successfully with our voices. We move about the stage, this place we live, this St. Nicholas Church and Community, we know where we find our strength...where we find our motivation...where Jesus is found in the breaking of the bread and in the cup of salvation...gifts of the field placed upon God's table, our Table of Life.  And perhaps, more importantly and blessedly so, we find Jesus in one another...in our youngest cast member to our most seasoned performer.

Our stage is open to more performers...there is always room for others.  Let's welcome the stranger at the door to enter, walk onto our stage and become a full cast member, part of our community.  Our only qualification to be counted as part of our cast is that others are willing to love and be loved...the lines are easy and the rewards are glorious and divine!    And the curtain will never come down on our stage...the lights will always be on and the performance always comes from a place deep, down inside us all...from our hearts filled with love for one another, our love of Christ and our love of the stage we call St. Nicholas Church and Community.

In the Redeemer,

Manny

Bishop's Committee News

The Bishop's Committee met with Canon Warren yesterday and we found him to be very helpful and pleasant to work with.  He and the Diocese want to meet our needs and want to work with us to determine and achieve our goals.  Please be here next Sunday to discuss the transition process with Canon Warren.  I think you will find him very helpful.

Marty O'Rourke has resigned as our general maintenance and cleaning person.  He will be going to services at St. John's with Mary Anne, which is understandable.  A big thank you to Marty for all of the work he has done over the years for St. Nicholas.  If you feel you can help with any one of the tasks, even occasionally, that were previously taken care of by Marty, please let one of the Bishop's Committee members know.

Another big thank you goes to Douglas VanHouten for stepping up to the plate and taking over this weekly newsletter.  As you can see, Douglas has given our newsletter a new look and there will be more changes coming to the newsletter in the near future.  If you have suggestions for items you would like to see in the newsletter, please let either Douglas or me know.

11:00am Funeral Mass

Grant, O Lord, to all who are bereaved the spirit of faith and courage, that they may have strength to meet the days to come with steadfastness and patience; not sorrowing as those without hope, but in thankful remembrance of your great goodness, and in the joyful expectation of eternal life with those they love.  And this we ask in the Name of Jesus Christ our Savior.  Amen.

Got Chili?
Chili SupperOur first annual St. Nicholas Chili Supper will be held on Saturday, March 5th, 2011 with the doors opening at 6pm.

If you like chili...this is the place to be!  Good food, wonderful people...lively conversation and DOOR PRIZES, too.

What's better on a cold, Saturday evening then a piping, hot bowl of chili, with onions and cheese?

And door prizes, too.  Can it get any better than that?

Yes it can...if YOU come and enjoy!

You get the idea...come on out, spend time with family and friends of St. Nicholas, fill up on chili and win a fabulous door prize.

All proceeds benefit St. Nicholas Church and the ministries of our congregation.

Have You Submitted a Pledge for 2011?

We welcome pledges at any time throughout the year, but we especially encourage those who have not yet submitted a pledge to St. Nicholas for 2011 to do so as soon as possible.  You'll find the pledge form at this link.

In the Episcopal Church, and specifically at St. Nicholas, we pledge to give some of our treasure to St. Nicholas Church.  Pledging allows your Bishop's Committee to accurately budget for programming, staffing, worship, outreach and facilities upkeep each year.  But just as importantly, pledging allows each of us to reflect upon the ways in which we choose to share some of what we've been given with others.  Pledging is a sign of our commitment, not only to St. Nicholas, but to each other as well.  When we prayerfully fill out a pledge card, we are saying that we realize the church indeed belongs to us, the people of St. Nicholas, but more importantly that we understand it belongs to everyone.  We are sending a message that we wish to be part of helping St. Nicholas continue its tradition of welcoming all.

As much as we'd love to write simply about our mission and ministries, the reality is it takes financial resources to keep our doors open and our lights shining brightly to and for all.  Our new building is a blessing, but it requires maintenance.  Our instruments - organ, pianos and human voices - assist us in joyful and meaningful worship, but they require tuning and printed music.  Our Food Pantry serves countless guests, but the gas and electric bills must be paid so that we have a place in which they may choose their items.

We ask that you prayerfully consider making a pledge to St. Nicholas for 2011.  The amount you pledge is not nearly as important as the fact that you choose to pledge as a sign of your commitment to the mission, ministries and realities of St. Nicholas.  Click here to get your pledge card and either return it by mail or place it in the offering on Saturday or Sunday.
