A Thriving Community Can Start with You

In order to build a thriving community, it takes citizens coming together to make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate. Whether it's contributing part of your paycheck or giving your time to help those in most need, you have the power to improve someone's life.

There are many ways you can lend a hand. Keep reading the Volunteer edition of our monthly e-newsletter to learn how United Way of Broward County can connect you to those in our community who are in need.

United Way of Broward County established its Day of Caring 21 years ago to promote the spirit and value of volunteerism, increase awareness of local human service agencies, and demonstrate what people working

together for the community can accomplish.

21st Annual Day of Caring:

SOS Children's Villages - Florida

This year's Day of Caring project focuses on giving the SOS Children's Villages Florida a much-needed facelift by painting the resident houses, improving landscaping and much more.

Day of CaringWith such a tremendous response from the community, volunteer registration for this year's Day of Caring has already closed with more than 850 volunteers registered.

You can still support Day of Caring through many sponsorship opportunities,  starting at  $100. For more info, click here.

Every year, hundreds of volunteers from local businesses, schools and community groups lend their time,

talents and energy to Day of Caring projects that

make a difference in our community.

Advocate

Be a Voice for Those who Cannot

United Way believes positive change involves active and verbal support for issues impacting the quality of life for all Broward residents. Everyone deserves a quality education, access to good healthcare, and economic opportunities for all, and you can help bring more of these services to our community.

Your passion for a cause, your desire to make a difference, and your unique voice - these are powerful tools you have to bring about positive change and help change lives and provide opportunities for those among us who cannot. Get informed, find your voice, and tell everyone you know.

What can you do today to be an advocate?

  1. Vote! Voting is the most powerful and significant voice we all have. The general election is Tuesday, November 6. Early voting in Florida is from Saturday, October 27 to Saturday, November 3 from 7:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. at select sites. Visit the Broward Supervisor of Elections website at www.browardsoe.org for a listing of locations.
  2. Get involved in a cause, program or organization for which you care deeply. Be a voice for children, the elderly, veterans, those who suffer from substance abuse, or low-income families who are struggling to make ends meet. Just get involved!

Open your heart, lend your muscle, find your voice, give a Saturday, think me before we. Reach out a hand to one and influence the condition of all.

ReadingPals Volunteers

ReadingPals volunteers celebrate after the first training session and look forward to a great year helping children learn how to read.

ReadingPals:  Volunteers Wanted

This month, United Way of Broward County is launching its ReadingPals program, a statewide initiative concentrating on engaging students from kindergarten through third grade. You can help a child succeed in school by becoming a ReadingPals volunteer and dedicating one hour a week for 25 weeks to read to a child.

Created in partnership with The Children's Movement, United Way of Broward County, Broward County Public Schools, the Women's Leadership Council, and the Children's Services Council of Broward County - and through support provided by Carol and Barney Barnett - ReadingPals is a fun and meaningful way to help make a difference in the lives of Broward County youth.
