November E-News

Supporting Our Veterans

Honoring Our Veterans

Veteran's Day is just around the corner and United Way of Broward County is honoring and serving our military in many different ways.

Our Supporting Broward's Military Families Initiative focuses on providing mental health and other support services to active members of the military and their families. This initiative will help reintegrate our Broward County veterans back into the mainstream of society and reconnect them with their families.

United Way of Broward County's service to our community's veterans spans beyond our Community Impact initiative and will celebrate women veterans at the Women's Leadership Council's upcoming Magnolia Luncheon. The group will also be sending care packages to women soldiers serving our country overseas.

Please continue reading this special Veteran's Day edition of United Way of Broward County's e-news to learn about how our community is celebrating the brave soldiers who serve our great country.

Military Family

Supporting Broward's Military Families

One of the important ways that United Way of Broward County is helping those who served our country is through its Supporting Broward's Military Families Initiative. This important Initiative will focus on providing mental health and other support services to active members of the military and their families. Our partners in this cause are Nova Southeastern University and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8195/Stone of Hope.

The Initiative has taken flight and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) returning service members, veterans and their families are being served. VFW Post 8195/Stone of Hope is providing a multitude of services for this Initiative including counseling, workshops, treatment and referral services which began on September 1. United Way of Broward County is providing $750,000 over three years for these programs.

There are more than 110,000 veterans

residing in Broward County and the need to

support these veterans is tremendous.

Meet a Local Veteran
US MarinesDerrick Franklin was part of the first group of military deployed to Afghanistan after the September 11, 2001 attack. Like most veterans, Derrick experienced many challenges upon his return home and becoming a civilian again. Derrick explained, "It's hard to adjust, nothing is the same and your perception of things is different... I came back with mixed emotions." He continued, "Before you come home, you don't think there is anything wrong with you, but your friends and family notice the differences. You really are crying out for help."

Even today, merely a decade later, Derrick is still adjusting to life in Broward County. However, he has come a long way and attributes much of the success in his progress to Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8195. The VFW works to fill the void that veterans face upon their return by providing job placement, therapy, group sessions and help connecting with the local VA. United Way of Broward County funds programs through its Supporting Broward's Military Initiative that support and help veterans like Derrick.
