March 2012                                                              Issue 1

Greetings!

Did you know that being interrupted by incoming emails can reduce your IQ by as much as 10%? A recent article in Government Executive magazine referenced a study conducted for Hewlett-Packard which found that checking emails as they arrived  (therefore interrupting what you were doing) lowered the average person's IQ by 10 points, and men seemed to lose more IQ points than women.

They went on to say that is about the same as losing a night's sleep, and even more than twice as damaging to the IQ as smoking marijuana!

While anyone who is involved in federal contracting would not even seriously consider smoking pot (why risk that clearance) we probably have been known to have occasional sleepless nights working overtime on RFPs or client projects. The fuzzy brain that results from missing sleep is pretty serious to me, and if reading emails as they pop up causes an equivalent drop in IQ, I for one find it a compelling argument to stop being a slave to the electronic ping. How about you?

An interesting anecdote:  I attended a breakfast yesterday with a dynamic group of business people who are sharing a guardedly optimistic view of the economy. Many are hiring, some mentioned large contract wins (private sector and federal), two mentioned selling/purchasing homes and others are aggressively looking to expand their client base. This is great news for all of us. As each individual person steps up to selectively build your local economy, pursue and compete for business and hire new employees, our local, state and country's economy will benefit. Let's do it-get that engine rolling!

Here's to your (and our) success!

Number of First Time Contractors Dipbloomberg chart govt contractors

An interesting bit of data complied by Bloomberg shows the number of new vendors for the government has dropped by 14% in 2011. Contractors were counted as "new vendors" if they hadn't done business with the government in the past 7 years.  Despite efforts to encourage more vendors the numbers have continued to decline. The government benefits from increased competition of multiple bidders on a contract, but many businesses feel there are too many barriers to government contracting.  For more information visit www.bgov.com

March Is Women's History Month

Growing out of a small-town school event in California, Women's History Month is a celebration of women's contributions to history, culture and society. The United States has observed it annually throughout the month of March since 1987. The 2012 theme, "Women's Education-Women's Empowerment," honors pioneering teachers and advocates who helped women and other groups gain access to advanced learning.
