December 2011                                                              Issue 1

Greetings!

Sometimes life's experiences are incredibly rich, with tough times and celebrations all thrown in together. Thanksgiving started off as kind of bittersweet.  We always hope to enjoy family then, but my mom is going through a tough time with dementia and my siblings and I had to work with some crises just before the holiday. Thankfully, her health otherwise is manageable, and we were able to transfer her into an appropriate (and wonderful) facility, but as you can imagine, the last-minute move had its own issues.

After finally getting back home that night, late Wednesday before Thanksgiving, I realized my heart was just breaking for the changes mom was dealing with so I poured a glass of wine. Before the first sip, my cell phone rang and I was told that MSNBC would like to interview me first thing in the morning (Thanksgiving!) on a live broadcast. I was speechless (not a good thing for someone who is going to be interviewed on national TV). I stammered through the logisitcs with them and hung up the phone, feeling as if I were in some alternate universe of roller-coaster emotions.

My wonderful husband said he'd go with me, and at 630am Thanksgiving morning, a limo picked us up for the trip to the MSNBC DC studio where a makeup expert made me "TV presentable". At 815am, Thomas Roberts interviewed me about Small Business Saturday, and I hope it was informative and helped spur a few folks to spend money with local small businesses to support the local economy. In a blink, my first national TV interview was over, and we were on our way back home.

The next stop at 1000am was the 21st Annual Turkey Bowl, a touch football game that my brother John has hosted for the past 21 years. The players now cross three generations and include friends, families and visitors. We've seen so much happen in that 21 years, it was a wonderful and fun celebration wrapped around a tapestry of history.

We then went home so Patrick could make his signature green beans and bacon dish for dinner, and were off to our son's in Virginia for Thanksgiving dinner.  This was so special because our toddler granddaughter has been experiencing some worrisome health challenges, and when we saw her, she was back to her energetic, joyful self. What a blessing, to be with her and her mom and dad, simply enjoying life and family and of course, fabulous food too.

As we drove home Thanksgiving evening, I tried to process all that had happened in the last 48 hours and it was, well, life as we know it today. So rich, full of heartbreak and happiness, all at the same time. I am so grateful for my families (at home and at work!), friends and colleagues.

As we wrap up this year and plan for the next, I hope you have a rich life, more happiness than heartbreak and special people around you to see you through both.

 Here's to your success.
