Dog-Day Cicadas are emerging
It is that time year with long warm days referred to as thethe dog days of summer. Well, that kind of weather brings out the Dog-Day Cicada. Male cicadas rest on tree trunks
and branches and "sing" to attract females, producing a periodic
whine by means of two special vibrating membranes in the sides of the
abdomen. Females do not sing.
Come out and listen for them at Blandford! This photo was taken at our marquee on Leonard and Hillburn Ave, and shows a cicada emerging from its nymphal skeleton.
