Visionaries
What makes a visionary successful?
Johannes Gutenberg borrowed an idea, took it to the next level and changed the world forever. Does that make him a success?
The Chinese had developed a printing process with movable type. The problem was that the type was made of clay and wore out quickly. Gutenberg was a metallurgist and made type that could be used over and over. The Gutenberg press made printed material available to the masses at a time when only the elite had access to the information contained in books.
Most notable is the Gutenberg Bible which is credited with having the largest impact ever on Christianity.
You have already guessed the similarities with Steve Jobs, the founder of Apple, haven't you? When the Apple computer line appeared on the scene, personal computers were in their infancy. Most were difficult to operate because the users were required to use arcane DOS commands. Jobs instructed his engineers to use symbols (icons) so that even a child could use a computer. Massive amounts of information would now be available to the masses.
Here is where their stories diverge.
In an odd coincidence, there were two Johannes in the Gutenberg story and two Steves in the Apple story. Johannes Fust financed Gutenberg and, when the printing press became a hit, Fust took the credit. It was actually known for years as the Fust Press. Gutenberg died a lonely, angry and poor man.
Steve Wozniak was on the Apple team when Steve Jobs was ousted. Rather than become bitter, Jobs started another technology company and, when the opportunity presented itself, took over again at Apple. He was the visionary behind the iPod, the iPad and the iPhone.
What's the difference in these two visionaries? Persistence? Character? Both took existing ideas, expanded on them and had their dreams taken away.
What do you think defines the difference?
