High School Feels the Excitement of New Rosh HaYeshiva

Rabbi Avraham Friedman, Rosh HaYeshivaAlthough it has only been a few weeks since Rabbi Avraham Friedman shlita was appointed Rosh HaYeshiva, Fasman Yeshiva High School students - and especially the upperclassmen - are already feeling the excitement that Rabbi Friedman is generating in his new leadership role.

The Rosh HaYeshiva's commitment to the spiritual progress of the entire Yeshiva was evident from the very first shiur klali (general gemora lecture) that he delivered to the 12th Grade, Beis Midrash, and Kollel. Rabbi Friedman masterfully presented the subject in a manner that all in attendance - from the weakest to the most advanced students - could gain. The shiur was not only a demonstration of Rabbi Friedman's pedagogical dexterity, but also a manifestation of his desire to help each talmid succeed in limud haTorah.

If it was shiur klali that offered the talmidim a glimpse of the Rosh HaYeshiva's greatness in Torah, then it was the Shabbos of "Torah Bowl", Parashas Ki Sisa, which gave them an appreciation of his warmth and his exuberance. Not content to watch the lively, spontaneous dancing Friday night during Kabbolas Shabbos, Rabbi Friedman, who had broken his foot a week earlier, grabbed his crutches and, to everyone's amazement, joined the crowd encircling the bima! The typically emotion laden singing at the Shabbos meals was heightened further, as the bachurim gathered around their Rosh HaYeshiva to sing and be inspired.

Rosh HaYeshiva's Thursday Night Chumash Shiur

Amidst the uplifting zemiros and feelings of camaraderie at Shalosh Seudos, Rabbi Polstein spoke to the talmidim and, with his usual eloquence, put the feelings of many into broader context. "We can all feel the excitement of having Rabbi Friedman as our Rosh HaYeshiva," he said "and we should feel fortunate to be part of the Yeshiva as it begins this new chapter. But it's not enough just to be enthusiastic; these feelings must impel us toward greater spiritual achievements."

FYHS Participates in Israel Outreach
Members of the IDF holding mishloach manos
As worldwide Jewry turns to the dangerous situation in Israel, Fasman Yeshiva has increased its involvement in reaching out to those who live there.  New this year, is a collaboration with Connections Israel, a Jerusalem-based organization founded and run by an FYHS alumnus, which seeks to foster connections between American Jewry and Israeli citizens and soldiers.

The Yeshiva, along with many other American Jewish high schools, has participated in a special Purim program consisting of sending mishloach manos packages to Israeli soldiers. Accompanying these packages were letters expressing greetings and chizuk, which were composed by the high school students themselves.  The letters were written in Hebrew as part of a school-wide Ivrit-class project.  In all, the Yeshiva alone was able to reach two entire IDF units, a total of sixty soldiers.  The Connections Israel website contains a video of several soldiers receiving the packages, which were clearly greatly appreciated.  Participation in this program is just one of the many ways FYHS seeks to raise students' Israel awareness and to encourage them to connect with their Israeli brethren.  Other ongoing projects include the student-run Israel Action Committee, which recently held a pizza-lunch fundraiser, the Rabbi William Z. Novick Bigdei Yisroel clothing drive, emergency tehillim sessions, and the Od Yosef Chai matanos L'Evyonim campaign, which benefits the poor of Yerushalayim.
FYHS Takes to the Slopes
Seniors, Michael Kahn, Rapha Margolies and Sasson Gabay on a ski liftOn a sunny morning in late January, excited FYHS students set out on their annual ski trip to Cascade Mountain Ski Resort. The boys had their choice of skiing, snowboarding or inner-tubing down the slopes. After a full day of competition to see who could ski the best (and who could fall the least), the boys headed to the Pearlstein Resort at Camp Chi for dinner. After dinner and a trip to Knucklehead, a bowling and amusement center, the students prepared for a beautiful and inspiring kumzitz, complemented by our own yeshiva student band. It was there, amidst the inspiring music and serene environment, that the seniors came together to speak about the friendships they have made at the Yeshiva and about what their relationships mean to them.

Wishing you and your family a chag kasher v'sameach and a continued happy and healthy year!

Sincerely,

Fasman Yeshiva High School
